Need "Salvation History" or "The Story" for RCIA Instruction

I went to St. John Bosco Catechist Conference at Franciscan in 2009 and learned a great deal regarding RCIA leadership. One thing they drove home was presenting our “Story”, the story of the people of God. The idea: to give the inquirers a framework for all of the Bible stories they may already know - beginning with creation and going through Christ’s life/death/resurrection, the Church and the end of time. It’s a huge talk. I’ve done it twice and I don’t do it justice. What I’m looking for is Jeff Cavins Great Bible Adventure in a 60-90 minute condensed version. Or something similar. Is there anything out there?

If not, do you present this talk? Do you have any suggestions for me?

Scott Hahn condenses salvation history by talking about Old Testament Convenants and New Testament Sacraments.

You might contact EWTN direct and tell them what you’re looking for and what they suggest.

Stephen Ray’s “Footprints of God” series is 13 parts, but he might have a condensed version.

His publisher Ascension Press has an 8 week version that gives a good overview, The videos alone are 8 (20-30) minute segments
Mark Hart does the same program for Teens, the videos are shorter, about 20 minutes, and what we use in Confirmation and RCIA, over an 8 week period for HS, a 4 week period for RCIA & adult classes. DVD’s are less expensive, I have one student guide and one leader guide, as each person does not really need to have a workbook to write the questions & answers, they use their journals. I do by the color coded bible bookmark for each participant.
 
You’re right, it is a huge talk, but a very important one! 🙂

In recent years, Jeff Cavins has partnered with Ascension Press in branding and reproducing his excellent Great Adventure Bible studies; however, one of the original presentations from Cavins is still available from Saint Joseph Communications: saintjoe.com/prodinfo.asp?number=6401. It’s a much shorter version (only 4 sessions) which might be helpful in giving you an idea of how to condense the information. It’s not quite as polished and refined as the Ascension Press materials, though, and there are a few slight differences in the structure he presents.

At the most basic level, though, I think a great way to go about it is to use the major covenants that Dr. Hahn uses and Jeff Cavins borrows. These covenants can be used to illustrate the ever-widening covenant God makes with the human race. These covenants are Adam (couple), Noah (family), Abraham (tribe), Moses (nation), David (kingdom), and Jesus (Church). You can see them as ever growing concentric circles with each covenant bringing more people into the fold than the one before it. Indeed, that’s really the bottom line of what’s going on in Scripture (and the history of the world): God wants to bring as many of us to Him as possible.

These covenants are sort of the light posts along the journey of salvation history. In 60-90 minutes, hitting these six benchmarks would be the way I would go about it. That gives you 10-15 minutes to speak about each covenant.

You might look at the resources available on Hahn’s salvationhistory.com website, too. His online study From Genesis to Jesus (also available in book form) is the same sort of thing as Jeff Cavins’ Great Adventure.

Joe, thanks! I actually have printed out all of that material from saintjoe - its great stuff. It (along with a powerpoint from www.israelcatholic.com) are the basis for my talk. I just would like to hear it from someone who’s done it before, and done it well. I’ll pm Marccard… thanks for all the suggestions!

I will be teaching the precatechumenate for RCIA and I am looking for a condensed story of Salvation, Genesis through the Gospels. I have heard it before and would like a copy to read to the inquirers. I am not looking for a 12 week course or a $300 set of DVDs. This is something that takes about 15-20 minutes to proclaim.

If anyone has something like this I would truly truly appreciate it.

All of salvation history in 15 minutes!? :eek: That’s a tall order! 😉

The closest thing I can think of is Hahn’s From Genesis to Jesus. If you go through the outlines for all six lessons, that might help, but you’d probably have to whittle down the info if you want to do it all in 15 minutes.

Basically, Hahn breaks it down into a series of successive covenants that involve an increasingly wider group of people. These people serve as the main touchpoints for salvation history: Adam (covenant with a couple); Noah (covenant with a family), Abraham (covenant with a tribe); Moses (covenant with a nation); David (covenant with a kingdom); and Jesus (covenant with the Church).

If you talked about each of these covenants for 3 minutes with a one minute intro and one minute conclusion, then you could do it in 20 minutes. That’s the route I would take.

Thanks for the advice. The director of the RCIA program at my parish read something that started with Adam and Eve, the covenant with Noah, the covenant with Abraham and the covenant with Moses. Then the nativity, the crucifixion and the resurrection. Maybe it took longer than 20 minutes but she did this the first class of RCIA and it was wonderful.

Unfortunately she has not been able to give me a copy and I want to share it with others. I received a couple of private messages with good information. It was a great way to start the class especially because some of the inquirers are not yet baptized and do not have any faith formation at all.

I’ve posted a message that said I’d be willing to share my RCIA Salvation History handout. And that’s quite true - except I can’t figure out how to do it using this site. I thought I could send it via the PM system but I can’t figure out how. So for right now anyone who wants the file has to send me their private email address - which some may not be willing to do.

Anyone out their with experience on how to exchange files via CAF? I’ve tried the help forum, but no answer (yet).
