I have posted something very similar before, a while back, but I’m feeling lost here. I’m trying to find an MMORPG to play, but I can’t find any (exempting lord of the rings online, which is pretty stale) that I feel 100% sure that I can play it morally, or not. I guess the question ultimately lies in this, How does one determine between Fantasy and Offensive/ even demonic?

I know that Lord of the rings and The Hobbit are accepted in the Catholic community, and usually Narnia. But then we have Harry Potter, which many feel is not right (I don’t know personally myself, I have never seen it). SO how do we know? How can we know?

Please help, thanks

This is a very debatable/controversial subject, but the best advice I can give u is that if it makes u uncomfortable, then don’t play it.

The only other things I will say is if there is a bunch of gore, nudity, or things which force the main character to do obviously immoral things for the player’s entertainment (which are things we shouldn’t be enjoying since it does effect us spiritually), I would probably stay away, and look for other safer options.

It seems Pope Benedict delivered a message about video games (and other media).

I’ll just quote one part of it:

“Any trend to produce programs and products – including animated films and video games – which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray anti-social behavior or the trivialization of human sexuality is a perversion, all the more repulsive when these programs are directed at children and adolescents,” Pope Benedict said.

Why don’t you play Puzzle Pirates?

The admins (Ocean Masters) keep a firm grip on observance of the Terms of Service, which prohibits disruptive behavior, including profanity and harrassment. The game is entirely based on puzzle minigames. The worst thing might be a cartoonish depiction of alcohol intoxication. But no personal firearms are portrayed; there are cannons and ships shooting each other. There is no blood, and there is mostly no religion depicted at all, except for a few instances of alchemy and accoutrements.

I have played this game for eight years and I find it to be very engrossing and deep, yet easy to play. I have made many friends there; quite a lot of mature people like me play it, and we stick together. I daresay we outnumber the children.

Man, puzzle pirates looks…lame lol.

I’m not concerned with violence, I don’t find that o be wrong in video games, unless used for things like GTA. I’m just concerned with whether or not fake religions is OK in games, and how to figure what’s fantasy and what’s not especially in terms of magic, and I can’t really go by how I feel about it, because I fear the worst to start with, scruples is it?

If u do suffer from a bit of scrupulosity, I would highly suggest to talk this over than with your pastor, and try to listen and do whatever he tells u.

Also, everything in a game is fantasy. 😃 But obviously, there are certain parts/aspects of that fantasy that we shouldn’t enjoy due to the nature of them.

As for fake religions and magic in games, I don’t think there’s anything generally wrong with them, as long as that religion or the magic spells aren’t blatantly Satanic and being glorified in some manner.

Thanks, and ofcourse others are welcome to add to the conversation

A friend of mine was showing me an electronic game he picked up. It followed an adventurer in the ancient Middle East. Anyway, there’s a scene where he passes an attractive woman laying on a sort of couch-bed. However, something strange happens. The camera moves just a little bit past the male adventurer and the woman so you can’t see them, and the focus is on a vase on a wooden pedestal stand. Slowly, the vase begins to tilt and rotate and you hear certain female sounds, and then the vase starts spinning faster until it hits the ground and the female sounds stop. Then the story continues.

To put it mildly: I’m sick of this.

My two cents,
Ed
