Ok, I am a converting catholic. I am in RCIA right now. My fiance is a cradle catholic. Our wedding was originally going to be in October but we have several other weddings 3 that month actually. Well we want to get married sooner anyways so we have been looking at all the options. We want an affordable wedding and my question is if we would fly away or elope is that a state of sin? would that not be acceptable to the church then?

I really don’t understand this attitude. If you are going to spend the rest of your life together, and you want to do it right, isn’t it worth waiting and taking the time to do all the steps to do it right?

If you are serious about converting, then you should be serious about following the Church’s marriage laws. If you want a sacramental, Catholic marriage, then go through the process to have a sacramental, Catholic wedding.

If you fear waiting, then you should not be getting married. My DH and I were engaged for four YEARS. We had good reasons, and we lived through it. My DH adamantly refused to get married anywhere outside of a Catholic church, and I thank him for his backbone.

For a baptized Catholic like your fiance, yes, he would be entering a state of mortal sin to enter a “marriage” not recognized or performed by the Church. In order for a marriage performed outside the Church to be valid in the Church, you would have to get a dispensation.

Just take your faith seriously and wait out the process. It won’t kill you.

A wedding at your Parish does not have to be expensive - it would be far more expensive to fly away to a destination wedding!

The stipend for the Priest, the marriage license, you do not have to have a fancy gown or a 10K ring, a pretty sunday best dress will do. Get some flowers from WalMart and tie them together with a bit of ribbon, wrap your Rosary around them to make a boquet.

Make a few invites for close friends and family, hand deliver them 🙂

Reception can be as simple as punch and cookies in the Church hall.

The price of a Sacramental wedding - priceless.

Married Love is “always and forever.”

One need not have a “big” wedding, however one MUST BE "married in the Church, in front of wittness’s. It can be even after a daily Mass, if your Pastor aggrees to it.

You both must also COMPLETE your “pre-Cana” classes B4 getting married.

Did you know that you and your spouce are the ones who “marry” each other. The Priest is only the wittness for the RCC.

It is what the two of you do and say that makes the union licit. Certainly you do not want to cohabit prior to your marriage, as that would be Griviously sinful.

May God bless you both, and grant you many children!

First, congratulations on your upcoming wedding and on being enrolled in RCIA!

Catholics are married in Catholic Churches by Catholic priests. That being said, there’s no reason why you can’t fly away to be married, but the hassel of arranging all the details (finding a Church, choosing a priest, getting the marriage license for that location, etc) may not be worth it. At least, it wasn’t for me and my fiance.

I’m also a convert and my fiance is a cradle Catholic. Our wedding was going to be a big event, but after a month or so of preliminary planning, we decided a small ceremony was more than adequate for the two of us! We’re celebrating Mass with 10 friends/family in the chapel of my fiance’s home parish, and then heading out to eat afterwards. Total cost of everything (gown, shoes, veil, precana, marriage license, rings, photographs, Church donation, announcements & reception) will be under $2500. We looked at eloping/destination type things, but it was a huge hassel (for us) and would have ended up being more expensive. Another major factor for us was that a destination wedding would have to be in a Church we had never been to, celebrated by a priest we had never met - but that was just our personal preference.

Anyhow, good luck with your wedding planning & may God Bless your future marriage!
