My girlfriend’s grandfather is in the late stages of thyroid cancer. He probably has a matter of a few weeks at most. He has been making known his wishes for when the time comes that he passes and he wants me to sing the funeral mass. I have sung a requiem in the EF before but never in the OF. I’m familiar with some of the standards. I will be getting in touch with the priest in the next few days. Suggestions on some hymns would be appreciated. He doesn’t want anything schmaltzy or contemporary, he wants his service to be dignified, but not over the top. The family is also Italian if anyone knows any appropriate Italian hymns.

The strife is o’er by Pierluigi
Pains Angelicus
Ave Maris Stella
Stabat Mater

Not Italian like the funereal Non Piangere Liu, but might be good selections.

Requiem is so beautiful but good luck finding anyone to sing it. No one knows it anymore.

Anything that would be used in the EF is appropriate for the OF. The Dies Iraes would be very suitable and sobering.

Holy God We Praise Thy Name is popular at funerals, as is Ave Verum Corpus and Hail Holy Queen. The GIRM also encourages the use of the communion antiphon.

My daughter died very recently and she requested 8 Mozart’s Lacrimosa (very beautiful) a year or so before her unexpected death. Your post reminded me of the music at her funeral. We had The Strife is O’re’, Panis Angelicus and Ave Maria by Shubert. Although our organist sang Lacrimosa he couldn’t do it justice, it really takes both male and female singers, however, I did the best I could to keep my promise.

It was a very difficult time for my family and me and it helped that she had chosen a beautiful hymn, that I felt was an honor to her as she had been very talented in music and writing.

God Bless

Bernadette
