**Oh my goodness I feel like a 2000 year old dried out mummy corpse, lol. It is SO dry here. We used to have a really really cheap humidifier on our furnace but it didn’t work well and kept getting mineral buildup and overflowing so we ditched it when we had AC put in.

Anyways, we need some humidity before we just turn to dust and poof away, lol. For those of you who have experience, what should we get? Another one that goes on the furnace or a free standing whole home model? Or several “room sized” ones? If we get a free standing one there is the problem of where to put it. But at this point we just want what works and is a good value. Help!**

I have a “whole house” humidifier that sits in a corner of the dinning room. It has that fake wood look so it doesn’t look ridiculous sitting there. I have a small house (about 950 square feet excluding the basement). It probably wouldn’t work well in a bigger house.

I fill that puppy up about every two weeks or so. It has a gauge on it so it doesn’t run all of the time. It runs based on the settings I determined. It’s just me and my four kitties in the house. With the heat on, it gets so darn dry that all five of us are miserable. My energy cost hasn’t gone up much either. It costs a couple of dollars a month to run.

I can’t tell you how much something like that would cost. I got mine for free.

Well I have a 2,000 square foot home and I can get away with using 2 vicks vaporizers when the humidities get into the 15-20 percent range. I have both of them downstairs but sometimes I feel like I could use one more for upstairs where the kids sleep.

We only use them occasionally because in Texas our normal humidity range is 50-90 percent. Today its 40 degrees and 86 percent humidity.🙂

Tell ya what. Come over to GA and I’ll give you more humidity than you can handle. It’s been raining for a week now and it’s not suppose to stop until the end of this week. So we have more humidity than we know what to do with right now. But I will say I am very thankful for all the rain. We desperately need it and it will make the lakes more fun this summer.

Oh, I know how you feel! I’m getting so tired of the kids bringing me the lotion bottle.

We have a fairly small house and we just use one of those single room models. I don’t know what brand it is. Just a $20 jobber from wal-mart. I fill it up about once a day. It takes a gallon of water. We also got a fish tank for Christmas so we’ve been getting some good evaporation out of it! 😛

The dry skin doesn’t bother me half as much as gettng shocked a thousand times a day.

I’m curious as to why y’all need a AC in Edmonton?? LOL

Oh my do i have a “shocking” story! The other day I was doing dishes or something so hubby went to place a chocolate in my mouth since my hands were full… well, his finger made contact with my front tooth and I got a shock right through it and into the nerve:eek: It hurt BADLY for at least 10 minutes. I started to cry/say owww owwwww owwwww and poor hubby had no idea what the heck was wrong…he didn’t feel a thing:rolleyes:

Because when you live with arctic temps for most of the year those summer temps can FEEL like you’re being cooked alive, lol. Too hot to sleep or move. We just got AC this past summer and oh what a difference!!! I LOVE it. And so does our poor furry dog who would prefer to live in Alaska, lol.

It mustn’t be really dry where you are if you only need to fill up a whole house humidifier every other week! I fill up a whole house humidifier for a 1400 sqft home every other day!

I can’t help as far as getting one of those furnace ones or a console but do suggest you not get one that has the rotating filter - one more part to break! In my old house (the 1400 sqft one) the console sat in the hall with all three bedroom doors nearby, I had a special connector on the shower head and a long hose so I could fill it up with ease, then I got this idea when this one broke that I would get one of those that you take the water containers off and fill them up at the tub, it is a real pain in the tushy! I finally got a room one for my room, my daughter uses one in hers and we fill them up daily but not a problem because it isn’t a lot of water to be moving around!

So, if you go with a console, get one you can put a hose in and fill up that way and get a hose and special connector for your kitchen sink or shower so you are not hauling the water in any way - once Feanaro goes for the last part of his training you will be doing the hauling and you really don’t need to be doing that!

I tried to see if I could find a big one like I was talking about on-line but I only found one top-fill one that would cover your downstairs perhaps but not your upstairs so, maybe two, one for each level of your house.

I’m in Indiana. It’s not dry here at all. The only reason I need a humidifier is because the house gets so dry in the winter with the heat being on. I run it for a few months out of the year.

Our house is about that size… but the way it is designed leaves no room in the “hallway” between bedrooms upstairs (just enough room to walk).**

We have one in Lily’s room right now but her room is already one of the coldest in the house and the cool mist makes it worse…but it’s better than nothing for now.

I just don’t have a spot to put one on either level. Basement has lots of room but who needs a humid basement?

Ugh. Why does it seem like the simplest things can turn out to be the most complicated?:whacky:

I put in the Aprilaire Model 600 and it works very well for us:

Also, the water runs over a water panel. So the mineral build up is on the panel which gets tossed every year for a new one ($30 or so I think?). That means you don’t have to clean it and saves you a ton of time. It draws the water directly from a tap into a water pipe, and drains the excess into a drain near the furnace so there is no monkeying around with water for you (which, given your condition at times, would be a big help).

Also, it automatically takes into account the outdoor temperature when working, so it doesn’t pump too much water into the air when it’s warm out, and maintains a good humidity when it’s colder.

About $600 installed around here.

I agree. Maybe check into a furnace humidifier again. I know my husband wants to get one but we are looking at a $300-$400!

May I suggest you get a warm air (not steamer) humidifier for Lily’s room then? It might help heat her room at the same time as it humidifies it. You can then move the one in her room to your room for night time use.

Here is one that looks good as a warm mist humidifier holmesproducts.com/Product.aspx?pid=2395

This is like the one I use in my room - keep in mind that not only do I have to deal with hot air dryness but also I live in the desert! I fill it up a little over once a day and the water container is easy to fill and put back on.holmesproducts.com/Product.aspx?pid=2387

You don’t have any place in your downstairs for a humidifier? Do you have a fireplace you don’t use that you can set one in and aim the “vents” out to the house?

One of the “large room” humidifiers might work for downstairs. Where is your bathroom? Upstairs I am guessing and hoping you have a half bath downstairs!

Since you are running into some major dry air I would get one for each bedroom and one for downstairs and run them 24/7 or get another furnace one that you only need to keep clean, when you get one put in ask about using some kind of mineral tablet where the minerals will be attracted and easily removed from the system.

Nothing is more dangerous then a Canadian with a air conditioner.

I spent the night with a friend in Winterpeg in 04 (I mean Winnipeg) they took me out to supper to a pretty nice place. It was mid June about 70 degrees, and the place had the AC blowing like it was 100 degrees outside! I froze to death, I asked the lady serving us, “dang baby, why ya keep so cold in here?” “It gets stuffy this time of year around here” LOL

So I went back out to Reg’s car and got my sweatshirt. He said I was just thin blooded.

😃 If you own a sham wow apparently that can affect your humidity, try wringing it out 😛 (I couldn’t resist after reading that other thread, sorry!)

No help on the humidity. When it gets really bad around here, I boil water on the stove for a while (attended), or make sure that when showers are taken the doors stay open.

Oh, this reminded me, I open my dishwasher when it is done and let the dishes air dry and that adds some humidity to the air too! I can do this year round because I do live in the desert and we need the humidity (look, we tend to complain that it is “humid out” when it reaches about 20-25%)
