Can anyone reccomend a good book on how to deeped one’s prayer life, getting the most out of prayer?
thanks!

I have a prayer book that I like. But I don’t have it with me. I bought it a few years ago and haven’t seen one like it since. But it has an address on the inside. I’ll try to remember to have it with me when I’m next on the computer.

Sacred Reading by Michael Casey, OCSO

It’s on Lectio Divina. I think the best way into prayer is via Scripture.

For a fascinating and useful book on how the early Christians prayed you should read:

Earthen Vessels: The Practice of Personal Prayer According to the Patristic Tradition, by Gabriel Bunge.

Paperback: 222 pages

Publisher: Ignatius Press (March 1, 2002)

ISBN: 0898708370

amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0898708370/qid%3D1116967215/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-7263732-1539835

This book will certainly help you to get more out of prayer because it shows that we have in fact forgotten how to pray properly and are ignoring many important things.

anything by Romano Guardini, especially his little book on the Lord’s Prayer.

Peter kreeft’s prayer primer

appointment with God by Michael Scanlon TOR

One of the most beautiful books to lead you through prayer is “Come to Me in the Blessed Sacrament,” meant to be used during Eucharistic adoration.

It is one that Mother Teresa used and highly recommended. When I use this book, I always feel extremely loved and so grateful for the great gift Jesus gives us in the Holy Eucharist. It has some great insights into Our Lord!

It’s available here:

The Basic Book of Catholic Prayer: How to Pray and Why
By Lovasik

It you go to www.tanbooks.com, there are 3 books I recommend. The last two are booklets and very good reference because they are very basic.
-The Ways of Mental Prayer
-Catechism of Mental Prayer (booklet)
-Prayer, the Great Means of Grace (booklet)

Also, my recommendation to enhance your prayer life is to take what you learn from reading about prayer, and find a good prayer book that contains most prayers comon to Catholics…then, write your own prayer book/put one together that caters to your own personality and heart using both traditional prayers like the Our Father and Hail Mary…but them write some of your own prayers from your heart to include with the others…this is why having a computer can be nice.
I am slowly making one of my own, it is hard, but I think it will greatly aid my prayer life by keeping with my own heart and the Catholc spirituality.
