I’m thinking either the science museum or dinner and a movie. Leaning towards the science museum idea, because it’ll give us a chance to talk. What do you think? Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

P.S. She and I talked about a ski place we could go to last time I saw her, and I sent her a link afterwards, but she was non-committal about that, presumably because this is probably an idea for later, when/if things are a little more serious.

P.P.S. I’m also thinking of getting her a teddy bear with a state logo (my home state) - preferably a soccer logo, since she plays soccer - holding 3 roses in its paws (if it had opposable thumbs). I know it’s kinda sappy, but you know.

Part of the fun is making such decisions yourself. 🙂 Actually, it can be a lot of fun. It’s like with a game… the more you do it without a walkthrough, the more fun you have in the end. Besides, what works for me doesn’t necessarily work for you or your girl.

Just curious, so what did you two do on your first couple of dates? - Also, so how long have you known each other and stuff?

It has been a LONG time since I dated, (married now for many years) but I favor the science museum, and for the very reason you named.

When my wife and I were dating, we were as poor as dirt. One of our favorite “date” things to do was to go down to the levee and watch the boats. For some reason, we developed the custom of bringing bagels and cucumbers along, to eat. (Inexpensive, but otherwise inexplicable.) We talked and talked and talked as we watched the lights of the boats going up and down the river. There was a sort of magic to that. We sat right at the water’s edge, and if a particularly big boat went by, we could decide whether we needed to move back up a bit or not. Sometimes, if I had more money than usual, we would end up going to a very unusual ice cream parlor that had a “Cyrano de Bergerac” motif to it.

I very much favored going to a place where they served drinks, but the tables were chess boards. Chess pieces were on the wall at each booth, and I always like playing chess with my date. Seemed like they did too. If the girl didn’t know how to play chess, I would teach her, and the resulting game was usually the occasion for a lot of laughter and frivolity.

In all the years I was dating, I only took a girl to dinner and a movie once, and it was BORING. I resolved never to do it again. Symphonies are different, though. Those are nice, and it was nice to go to the ice cream parlor afterward. Girls who are dating usually watch their weight very carefully, and believe me, ice cream is a major indulgence for most of them. They get to indulge, and you give them an excuse to do it. It was always my observation that there’s nothing like whipped cream and chocolate syrup to get a girl to relax and tell you about herself. Unless she has super-high metabolism, she’ll pay for it for days of even closer weight watching, but she’ll sitll be happy for having done it.

I used to like to take girls to melodramas too; you know, where you throw peanuts at the villain and such. Nice to see your date unwind and boo and hiss the villain and cheer the hero and laugh at the jokes and cry for the “damsel in distress” and all that.

It always seemed to me the point of a date was to allow each person to learn about the other, and anything that encourages and allows relaxed self-revelation is good. Anything that discourages it is just a waste of time. You sit in a movie and what do you learn about a person? What does she learn about you? Nothing. And at dinner with a waiter hovering about and everybody as stiff as a board, attentive to all the protocols? No. Science museum with mountainous ice cream treats afterward. That’s my vote. The art museum might be better, though, depending on the girl’s proclivities.

But what do I know about dating nowadays? Not much, that’s for sure.

The science musuem. I woulda never thought of* that.* That wouldn’t worked for me, cos if I announced, “I think we’re gonna go to the art museum.” My date woulda said, “alright Guy what’s goin on?” They would have instantly thought sumptin wasn’t right.

Goodness you are trying hard! Don’t spoil her too much as you need an equal relationship, not one where you become the one who makes all the effort. Instead of trying to smother her with kindness you lovely man, get her involved with some of the decisions…let her make suggestions too, have (name removed by moderator)ut. It’s really lovely you want to take so much care of her and treat her to every kindness you can think of…but there are husbands who’ve trained their girlfriends and wives to expect everything, then wonder why they in the end aren’t receiving much consideration.

You’re obviously a darling…but let her do some of the thinking and suggesting also. If you don’t she might feel overwhelmed and take flight

And what’s wrong with a few simple meetings for coffee in a cafe! You can talk without getting too complicated.

It could be that none of the above senarios might occur…but just wanting you to be safe and truly to find happiness.

Drop the teddy bear. Bad idea….

Science museum sounds appalling.

Go to the pub. Have a few beers (without getting sloppy). Then you will both loosen up and talk freely.

I think it’s too early to go skiing; that’s more of a thing for people who’ve been together a while, or at least at your fifth date. I never would have thought of going to a museum; I’ve never gone to a date in one, and I don’t know anyone who has. But, I am younger than you; according to your profile you’re 28 and I’m newly-24. If she’s around the same age as you and she’s also the artsy type, then maybe a museum isn’t a bad idea. It’s certainly unique. Frankly though, a lot of people don’t really operate on intellectual levels and going to a museum wouldn’t really be appreciated. What type is she?

When I was 20, I went on a third date, we just hung out and ate. On another relationship when I was 19, on the third date, we just went to a mall (we’re both shopping addicts). The point is, it doesn’t have to be something too fancy; so relax, don’t stress about it. I agree with Trishie on that. I know it’s hard not to be anxious, and I get anxious too when I’m preparing to date someone new; it’s much easier for me to tell you not to be anxious than for me to actually not be anxious if I were in your shoes.

Tell us more about her, maybe we can help you decide. Is she deep? Is she artistic? Is she a thinker? Did she go to college, and if so, what did she take? What does she do? And importantly, how old is she? I wish I knew what Wichita is like, so I could get a better feel of the atmosphere and come up with a good idea. But, you know what, since you two are on your third date, maybe it’s time for you both to figure out a place together. I think you’re past the stage where the guy (or whomever asked the other out) has to pick. At least that’s my experience. The first two dates would be more for that.

I’d really like to help you; if you happen to have Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger, feel free to add me on; my IDs are on my profile.

OH! OH! MY TURN! MY TURN!

Is there a way you could go to where there are tons of Christmas decorations and walk around looking at them? Lots of chance for going “ooo” and “oh wow” and “awwww” while still getting to talk…and then going for hot chocolate or great coffee…

Science museum would be fun too because it would give you a chance to talk but no teddy bear until the fifteenth date…no, I have no idea why.

I agree about the bear thing. It might look like you’re trying too hard. But, I don’t know, some people go for that. My last ex and I dated, then she dumped me; a year later, she came begging to talk to me when I didn’t want to talk to her (very messy breakup) and she was begging, “Please, all I need is a minute, please please please please please,” begging and crying outside while I didn’t let her in. I passed some food and something to drink to her, but she was out there crying in a very humiliating manner. Truth be told, I liked that, since I got treated really badly after the first time. Anyway, not everyone would be turned off by that sort of thing, but I think you shouldn’t take a chance on it and not do it since this is your first relationship with her, while I dated that person before. Going more strongly might be an option if she pined over you for a long time; otherwise, cool down a bit. But, you seem like a smart guy, so I’m sure you’ve gotten that figured out. Silly me, I didn’t put that in my previous post.

But, instead of a pub or bar, why not try a Starbucks? Try a movie first, then Starbucks, but don’t take anything with caffeine or anything cold (both could contribute to anxiety). The movie hopefully would loosen you both up.

Movies are a great date idea. Gives you a type of “shared experience” + something to talk about after…

Don’t wish to make it bitter, but most of my experience so far shows that leaving the female party some options generally ends in being considered not active or not impetuous enough. I stick by my ways, however, although generally knowing the consequences not so far off.

On the other hand, yeah, I can agree with the last statement, it’s no wonder in terms of laws of physics. That’s just how it works. Not like it wouldn’t be great if consideration met with consideration and effort on the one side caused similar effort on the other. Presumably, if the person is right, this actually happens.
You’re obviously a darling…but let her do some of the thinking and suggesting also. If you don’t she might feel overwhelmed and take flight
Yup. And if she doesn’t make use of the opportunity she’s probably not all that interested.
And what’s wrong with a few simple meetings for coffee in a cafe! You can talk without getting too complicated.
Definitely. Coffee works like charm.

SomeCatholicGuy, I hope my rather bitter opening didn’t discourage you. If it’s worth it for me after saying this, it should all the more be so for you after merely reading it, so I stay confident that you will not take it the bad way.

One more controversial thing I’m going to say is that you should allow yourself to relax. If you can’t relax and be yourself around the girl, then chances are she isn’t for you. This is not the same as wanting to impress her, to sweep her off her feet and so on - those are natural things and they’re quite good. But if you begin competing with yourself for her attention, in the end you might start perceiving her as an examiner, someone whom you can never really satisfy. Give to her a lot, but accept what she has to give to you. Apart from all the talking, there is also a lot of listening to do. A relationship does not happen between you and your vision of her - or especially of her expectations - but between you and her. You need to interact with her, not keep a vision of her in your mind for such purposes. This means attention, listening, understanding. We guys sometimes just conquer the girl, shower her with gifts, adjust our manners to meet her approval, do as best we can to meet our expectations of how she expects us to act and in the end it turns out there was little actual relationship between the persons. So as not to smother you, I will end here, but the short gist you’d do well to remember is that you need to communicate. That means a lot of talking and a lot of listening.

What kind of muesum would that be? One with the science of fire fighting and fire protection; old fire trucks; and new technology. Then at the end there is a room with a tv and newspapers where you can sit around for hours? 😃

that sounds like dropping back in to visit the guys at the firestation

we had zero money when we were dating, and would take the bus (we lived on opposite sides of town) and meet downtown, stroll around university district, window shop, look at statues, find cute little parks in unexpected spots, walk along the riverfront, find a place for a coke to sit and get warm

you know it is true love when you walk around Cleveland for a couple of hours after dark in 20 degree weather with wind blasting off the lake

and yes we knew all the museums and galleries which were free or had free days and hours and took full advantage, also know downtown libraries intimately

One of my most treasured possessions is a photo taken of DH and me on our third date. The State Fair (a theme park would have worked as well). Time to have spontaneous fun (rides, etc.). Found out he prays the Lord’s Prayer on a roller coaster ride . . . I do a lot of screaming and laughing. Still laugh about it after 20 years of marriage! There are also places where two can get a bite to eat and talk. There are lots of distractions if conversation lags or gets too intense for so early in the relationship. And lots of opportunity to see what unexpected interests the other has. He was late 20’s and I was early 30’s when we had our third date, so we weren’t kids, just behaving like kids. We saved the art museum until we knew for sure that the other would enjoy it as well.

Thank you all for your responses so far! I guess a little more background information is in order. She and I met at a Bible study. For our first date, we went to get coffee, and then went to the Bible study afterwards. I dropped her off at her place. For the second date, we went out to coffee again, and then went to an ice cream parlor next door. She’s 24, and she’s in fund-raising for a non-profit. I don’t know if she likes science museums, but I can’t take her to an art museum, because I already took another girl there a long time ago. As for the teddy bear, there’re two reasons. The first one is that a teddy bear will remind her of my name. The second one is that last time when I gave her the chocolates, she asked me if they’re from my home state, but they weren’t, so I thought it might’ve been a hint that since I was back home for the holidays, she wanted something from my state. Plus I already bought the bear. I think I can do without the roses, though. I’ll probably save that idea for next time. I will try to get her (name removed by moderator)ut on where she wants to go when I get back after the holidays, but she was the one who suggested going to the Bible study together in the first place, so it’s not like she hasn’t made any suggestions. Come to think of it, she’s been making most of the suggestions. Anyway, I hope that helps. Thanks again!

I like the bear idea but I am sappy that way. Honestly go with your gut feelings. I really wouldn’t have wanted my hubby (while were dating) checking with a group of people to see if his ideas were ok. Just go with what feels right to you.🙂

while rayne likes the bear idea, go with the majority on this one-- ***ick ***on the bear. kill the bear. it doesn’t matter if you already bought the bear. let it hibernate for a LOOONG time.

revisit the art museum idea. just because you went there on a previous date, doesn’t make it anathema to you now. art is timeless. go and have fun.

if she wants something with your state name on it, get her a map, show her where you lived. if she needs cue cards to remember your name, you’re already in trouble. move on to someone who won’t forget your name.

in the end, you gotta trust the process. you can make a good impression, but you can’t manufacture the whole thing and expect it to be the real thing everyone is looking for. trust the process and you will be surprised how much richer you are for having lived the experience instead of having manipulated the experience.

my husband and i were friends for a couple of years. finally, when i sensed some feelings growing, i asked him if he was going to ask me out. he said “no.” i thought i was going to die of embarrassment for both of us. what a big mouth i had!

then he went on, “I’m not going to ask you out on a date. I’m going to ask you to marry me.” i agreed to marry the guy before we ever had an official date.

we celebrated our 20th anniversary last summer.

we lived the process of knowing each other, liking each other, laughing with each other in real space/ real time, instead of trying to make romance magic. 20 years later, we still like each other. still laugh with each other. still look forward to being with each other.

the process worked for us. the romance came later (and hasn’t left yet.)

I think everyone is different. Personally, I would LOVE a date at a science museum, but that’s probably because I am a total museum nerd, lol. I would be thrilled if a guy came up with that idea on his own! But, I also know a lot of girls who wouldn’t like it at all. 😃

(If you do go, you might want to pick a time that’s not a “field trip day”; my nearest science museum was completely full of screaming children the last time I went, which would probably not be conducive to a nice date, lol.)

Same with the teddy bear, I’m sure some people would like it, but I’m not sure that I’m one of them.

Well, it would take a very specific woman to like a science museum. I’ve nearly done an arts one but in the one case it didn’t work out for some reason I don’t remember and in other one a couple of days after her own proposing it, she backed out of the idea of really needing to meet me at all. I suppose my ultimate pick is going to like art museums since art was a huge part of my upbringing (dad was an artist - painter, sculptor, the traditional one), so I doubt I’d match well with someone who didn’t like art.
but I can’t take her to an art museum, because I already took another girl there a long time ago.
How is that an impediment? I’ve taken several women to a cafe one of the showed me a grand total of five years ago.
The second one is that last time when I gave her the chocolates, she asked me if they’re from my home state, but they weren’t, so I thought it might’ve been a hint that since I was back home for the holidays, she wanted something from my state.
It depends on the tone of her voice, but I think you’re reaching too far and she simply connected a brand of chocolates she didn’t know with your visit to your home state.
think I can do without the roses, though. I’ll probably save that idea for next time.
One good thing about roses is that they are not a gift per se, at least not in the sense a birthday present is. However, they offer a similar kind of joy to the recipient.
Come to think of it, she’s been making most of the suggestions.
Hope you aren’t being henpecked. 😛 😉
