I was wondering if I need to go to confession for this. I was looking through the pictures on my computer this evening because I was uploading them to Walgreens.com to print. In doing that I found some very disturbing pictures of my brother and his ex-fiance…I’m sure you know what I mean… I flipped out and brought it to my Moms attention because I was so horrified. I am 22 and my brother is 27. I immediately deleted the pictures. I was NOT aroused, interested in looking at the pics, etc NONE OF THAT. I am very disturbed!!! I am still curious how they got on my cpu. My brother and his ex fiance did borrow my camera and Im guessing when I plugged the camera in they uploaded.
What should I do. I feel dirty because I have seen such horrific images but its not like I wanted to see them.
My mom and I brought it to my brothers attention and he got defensive and walked out of the house. My guess is he was embarassed. I think he needed to know though about it because thats serious stuff and it’s on my computer and it was taken with my camera.
Sorry for the rant.

No, in short.

For something to be a mortal sin:
1 It must be a grave matter
2 One must have full knowledge of it’s gravity
3 One must have full consent.

You did not possess the last aspect, and as such, it is not a mortal sin.

Just to put this reply into perspective I’m the mother of three adult men.

For what it’s worth I fully agree with “jitterbug” it is Catholic doctrine. However you may want to reflect on how you handled the situation. I do see that since your brother used your camera you might want to confront him on this issue. But you say that you and your brother are both adults. As I see it you were completely out of line to involve your mother in this. Imagine the horror he felt at 27 to be confronted by his mother on this issue. It would have been a different story if you were (let’s say) 14 but you are 22. If my son had brought that pic to me I don’t think that I could have held my temper. My tirade would have begun “how dare you?” and degenerated from there. The issue of the camera is between you and him. The issue of what was depicted is between him and the Lord. I think back over my life and I thank the Lord that my mother did not see pictures of things that I am now profoundly ashamed of.

I hope that this does not ruin the relationship between you and your mother on one side and your brother on the other. It is my opinion that you owe your brother a profound apology.

There’s no harm in going to Confession. I remember a similar story. I was interning as a student and was reading a police report regarding a “sexual offense” let us say. Whomever wrote the synopsis needs to be retrained in writing synopses because he was waaaay too detailed for what was supposed to be only a summary. I literally got the play-by-play. It burnt the most disturbing images into my head. Every time I went to bed or closed my eyes they’d re-appear. While it wasn’t a mortal sin, I still went to confession because one of the graces it can bestow wipes away the memory. After I walked out of the confessional, I couldn’t even remember what I had read.

I know if I saw such images as you, I’d want the memory removed from me.

I was in the living room on my computer, sitting across from my Mom. When I saw the pictures my first reaction was to freak out, thats how my Mom got involved. Besides, this is not the first time she has seen images of my brother unfortunately. He has been doing things like this since he was a teen…and yes my parents took him to plenty of psychologists and psychiatrists.
My Mom did not go on a tirade, she just said ____ we found pictures on _____'s computer of you and _____ blah blah blah. That was in it. Its done and over with.
I dont see why I should apologize to him. He used my camera and my computer to take sinful pictures. I was always OCD about letting him and his girlfriend use my stuff and people would wonder why? He is the type of person who denies things when they are right in front of his face. I could have made a bigger scene by keeping the pictures and shoving them in his face and screaming but I was calm and just said this was very disturbing for me to see.
How many of you would be disturbed to see similar pictures?

Hmm. Well… I always suggest frequent confession on principal, as it’s good for the soul. However, in this case…

Physician of the World, guide me in this post.

Oh noble poster, thy scruples are evident. Taketh thou two of thine holy chill pills, and calleth on the Lord upon the dawn.

No, you don’t NEED to go to confession. Talking to your priest may help though.

Also, you should probably stop lending your camera to your brother.

Yeah well his ex fiance is out of the picture now so…
Hopefully he has learned his lesson.

Ha ha.

I agree with the poster that said showing it to the Mom was out of line. You are two, adult men. There are certain things that should stay between brothers.

Can you explain **why **you think you would need to go to confession for this? It might be helpful to you to think through what made you second guess this situation as far as needing confession so that you can p(name removed by moderator)oint your reasoning to help you in future situations.

What makes you think you did something that needs confessing? What commandment did you break? What sin did you commit?

I was assuming OP was thinking this bordered on viewing porn, but didn’t know if it counted because it was entirely accidental.

think we can let the op answer for herself cant we. Even if she don’t reply here she may still be able to answer for herself. 👍

WingsofEagles is correct, because of the pornographic images. It was entirely accidental and though I didnt continue looking at them (who would?), I still saw very disturbing, inappropriate images.
