I need to learn Latin this summer for school, but I don’t have $$$ to drop on summer classes. Has anyone tried Rossetta Stone language learning software? Is it a good investment? Would it help me with understanding ecclesial Latin? I would need to learn Latin eventually to do doctorate work. Any ideas?

I have Rosetta Stone beginning Latin, and I would say that it is a good product but it is definitely keyed toward a particular learning style. It is immersion style learning where they give you vocab and you are supposed to slowly imbibe the grammar as you see how the words change. I work the opposite way, so when I actually took a class I really enjoyed that we started heavy on grammar and light on vocab until we had the skills to use words more effectively. It’s just different strokes for different folks.

Might I suggest Jenney’s First Year Latin? You can get it at Amazon (used) for much less than the Rossetta Stone. I think it’s better than Wheeler and the Rossetta Stone put together (especially for self-study).
