Just an FYI, I think I had my reply window open when I replied this afternoon. I hadn’t read your posts immediately preceding my post. Actually, looking at those my post almost sounds like a joke, and that is not the way I meant. I think I would have said you have reason to hope prior to the latest conversation, but now I would just say maybe this girl is “un-understandable.” Sorry.

😦 Thank you, Dulcissima. I think I’ll simply have to ask her if I want any concrete answers. I’m not sure I want to do that. It could put a strain on our memories and prevent a nice and somewhat romanticised friendship from being a nice memory from the youth, rather leaving both people with discomfort and me with a broken heart. Still, I think I’ll need to do it and I definitely can’t drag my prior attachments into any new relationship with anyone.

I think I’ll need to be kind to her and see if I can outwait her strange behaviours and maybe after a while she’ll settle. The last conversation, she was hurried and probably somewhat hurt. I’ll openly ask her if she was offended by something and if there’s any bad blood between us. Although I’m afraid that if the bad blood turns out to be my pressure for a relationship while she wants none, then that will probably kill any prospects of a relationship - I mean not the fact itself but telling it out loud.

Well, God works in mysterious ways and I have more confidence in Him than any girl or myself or my abilities to judge situations. Sometimes friends give up on anything romantic after such a conversation and they end up a couple later anyway. Or perhaps indeed she’s not the one for me and someone else will pop up on my way. I just can’t gloss over the way I’m attached to this girl and want to treat her like a princess, see her happy talking to me, care for her, you get the point. Maybe this is for a reason, maybe not.

One part of me thinks someone needed to say what she did - that we knew each other somewhat superficially. Of course, we knew some very core things, including deep details of family situations, but while we were attached to each other, this didn’t mean we knew each other’s everyday habits, friends, way of living, such things. Perhaps it’s not so bad that she said this and maybe there’s a need for a clean start if there’s anything to be. Maybe I’m seeing things with regard to our attachment and the meaning of her behaviour. Maybe that’s an illusion, a lie, and it needs to be removed before proceeding and actually building something real. Perhaps there needs to be another decision, on my part as well. I don’t know.

At this point I have no current desire to be talking to her and I can feel perfectly comfortable waiting until Thursday or maybe even later. And yes, asking her if she isn’t offended by something. There does feel to be some grudge.

As a grim reflection, I think I deserve whatever I’m getting for the way I didn’t make any moves when she was ready - if she was when I think she was. She was outgoing as am I know, or more, and I was also, but she couldn’t really declare any romantic feelings on her own and I didn’t do that, rather preferring to forget than risk a long-distance relationship - in addition to several minuscule things I didn’t like about her. It’s certainly possible she felt rejected at some point. Results of that are unpredictable. So I’m likely getting my dues now or at least that’s how it feels.

Well, guess what my friend did. He caught me unaware, twisted my wrist and grabbed then phone and then sent the girl a snip of a love message. Now I have something to explain…

As for what happened before, well, not much, just the met the girl “by accident” - well, partly, on Tuesday. After an academic conference, my former teacher dropped me off at one of our faculty buildings where the girl was likely to have some class, so I went and checked if she was in that course, what the dates and times were, if I knew some participants from the list etc. Turned out there was about an hour till her class. Battled myself, but decided not to procure any “accidental” meetings and anything else than walking up and saying hi would have been stalking. So I decided to go early to the building where I had another seminar. I knew there was some probability of meeting her on the way, although low, so I prayed I’d meet her if it were God’s will for me at that point, while not meet her if it weren’t, because I honestly didn’t even know which was better or preferable. After a while someone called me out and it was she. I walked her back to that building, we talked a bit, talked about possibly going somewhere together after a meeting we’d both be attending on Friday, but she didn’t know if she would be able to. And tonight I got a text message saying she managed to get all her university things right, but she neither the strength nor the will for the art gallery trip we were talking about.

And then when I was contemplating an answer, my M1 Abrams of a best friend, whom I was visiting when the message arrived, did what he did and also attempted to make me a purple eye so I could say I fought. Looks like I’m going to have a field day in the morning… I’ve already tried to explain it, but after three unreceived calls, I got an, “I’ve probably received an interrupted text message which wasn’t intended for me,” and then after another calling attempt, a, “Sorry, but I can’t talk now.” Which is less funny.

So, she either has completely no interest now, or she is upset that you are pursuing her and the other girl who the romantic text message surely must have been intended for. Hmmm…attempting to be a realist here, but I am guessing that it might be the lack of an interest. Although to be honest, if it was me, I would make sure that she knew because I would rather risk my own heart being broken rather than the other way around.

I’d rather the same.

I’ll tell you how it went today. I met her. She was happy to meet me and perhaps somewhat curious. She kept me company for until the meeting started and it somehow looked fine. She didn’t allude to the message in any way. I told her I needed to explain myself to her in that regard and told her that the message was indeed for her. And then she said in a nice voice, somewhat pleased, “Aha, so it just wasn’t finished?” or something like that. I was pleased with her reaction, but then I told her I didn’t want her to keep wondering. She said she wouldn’t and she presumed people acted rationally. She didn’t seem to like the story about my friend taking my phone and also clocking me one in the process (she did joke about it later, so I guess it wasn’t that bad), so I guess perhaps I shouldn’t have told her that. At any rate, during the meeting she was stiff and defensive. She was able to get relaxed and even smile, but most of the time she was sitting near the edge of her chair (the one farther from me, of course) with arms folded, which is a very strong defensive reaction.

During our conversation later, I pushed a bit and asked her when she would be able to be asked out (considering she was busy at the time), and she started saying she didn’t have the time for the meetings. I told her we didn’t meet so rarely before, so it wasn’t such a new situation (I was trying nicely to convince her that we should, not trying to get it out of her). Then she said yes, but those several years ago it was out of duty that we met so often. I told her we didn’t meet only in the course, but also after and we’d spend a lot of time together and also in summer holidays afterwards, so it wasn’t quite out of duty. And she finally told me she thought we had met enough for a long time and that she was surprised we’d have to meet so often now. I’ve messed up the order in which she said things, but she did say all that. However, the way she was somehow teaseful about it and showing me some claw was indicative of way, way more familiarity than between acquaintances. I flat out asked her to try and convince herself to me, which should tell her something.

Now I don’t know what she’s thinking, but I’m tired. I think the time spent on a futile chase could be better spent simply dispensing free legal advice to poor people, or even studying. Besides, I’m somewhat hurt and abashed now. And I’d like a woman who would return my attempts instead of thinking them too much and trimming it all down. She was that several years ago, but I’m not sure she’s it now. Just for comparison, in the morning I was so hungry I could barely kneel and pray because it was twisting my stomach, and also tired and sleepy so much it was difficult even to get up, but given the time it was, I went without breakfast or even coffee and actually ran to the bus in that state. I had two coffees already at university to keep up. At the same time, she’s downplaying the familiarity and dedication which was between us before, not to mention being disinterested now. It doesn’t strike me as two sides of a valid equation.

I’m in a bit of a predicament because I crossed the exclusive line in my mind, since while I haven’t done anything with her that I wouldn’t have done with a friend at some point in my life, the mind and intent was different and I’m not cutting contact with her or reducing it in any official way now. But I’m really tempted to cut it and reduce it to the same level she did.

Sorry for ranting. Was trying to keep it short this time, but alas.

I’d just cut the contact, or cut it way down. Let her try to chase you if she cares about it, put the ball on her side of the court. Its not always happy to think after putting in so much effort, that this may well come to nothing, but that’s the way things go. Otherwise turn your attention to someone or something else. Go out and try to make friends with a new girl. Even if you don’t take it that seriously, one you meet a new person, and you get your mind move elsewhere. Besides if she’s going to turn your way, she probably needs to see a risk of losing you.

It sounds like maybe it hurt her feelings to know you didn’t really write to her whatever it was that sounded romantic. And, despite the fact that we believe your friend was responsible, she was probably a bit skeptical since that sort of thing isn’t likely to happen among adult men. 🙂 And if she was skeptical, she might have been turned off at the idea of you concocting something silly instead of just telling her straight out how you feel. (I’m just telling you how I would view the situation if I were her.)

I’ve followed this thread with interest but haven’t replied yet. This is just my two cents:
  1. I would stop over-analyzing and hypothesizing and just tell her how you feel. If she’s interested, then great, if not, then you get to move on.
  2. If you are unable to tell her exactly how you feel, then I would stop doing the following:
  • texting, because it’s easy to misread tone - ESPECIALLY if you both are familiar with several languages and use them interchangeably.
  • referring to the past. Stop bringing up six years ago, or dwelling upon it, or attempting to create more intimacy from it than can be reasonably construed now. A lot can change and happen in six years, so the person she was then is not the same woman she is now. The secrets or talks you might have shared back then do not equate to the same level of trust in the present time.
It sounds like she enjoys being around you, but loses the chemistry or inclination when she isn’t in front of you. I can remember having similar issues with someone once. The time together was good, and I’d think I wanted to spend more time with him, so we’d talk about plans, and then after we parted and I thought about it more - I came up with plenty of reasons why we wouldn’t be right for each other, and would end up canceling and being annoyed by his persistence - because we’d always seem to run into each other (his doing, I think) and then I’d be confused again. Which only served to confuse him and it was not a fun cycle.

It sounds like you have a lot of love to give, and I think it’s a shame to waste it on someone who can’t quite decide she’s interested. But if I were you, I’d just say it straight out and either she’s interested or not, and if not, then move on.

My sense of it is that she is disappointed that the text message was not, in fact, your idea.

I think what she wanted the story to be was that you were in the middle of texting this message to her when something disastrous happened, and you had to send it to her unfinished.

That’s just my take on it.

Anyway, I’m with everyone else - tell this girl exactly how you feel about her, and mention your dreams - say, “I see us getting married in a year or two, and having a dozen kids. I hope they all look like you.” Or whatever.

But no head-games. No trips, no art galleries, no events. Just coffee, and nothing more than that, so that you can sit down and really talk, without having to look at your watch.

Thank you… Well. I’ve decided to let it lie for a while. I don’t have the strength to keep it up and even the interest is dwindling. If she wants anything from me, she has my phone number too. I can’t say I won’t discover some deep feelings for her in a while that just won’t go, but I think I’ve seen enough to conclude she isn’t really interested and maybe if she isn’t really interested in me, she should have a guy who will catch her interest without so much effort. Perhaps I should also find someone whom I can pursue without doubts or bad feelings. The fact that this thread spans over six pages is a good indicator of this. I’m even willing to put the “exclusive” stuff down an honest mistake and just give up contacting her. I’m a bit puzzled about some “signs”, but I think overall she isn’t happy with me in her life. I feel much like waiting and seeing whom else I’ll meet in my life yet for this reason. At any rate, I think it would be good to keep the ball in her court now and see if she contacts me in any way.

I’ve read all the posts.

Here’s my take. She acts like me when I am uninterested in a romantic relationship. Friends, sure.

Pass on this for now and wait. 6 years have gone by - if it was meant to be, she would show more interest.

Probably not a bad idea to give it a rest. I think perhaps your quickness to want to pick up where you left off and then some may have been preventing you from being open to discovering the woman that she is today. So, whatever way this ends up going, just don’t be in a rush. I think that eagerness can cloud your perception. It takes a long time to get to really know someone, and perhaps your desire for something exclusive is based more on past regrets than the current reality. Hopefully taking this little bit of a break will give you the chance to recharge your energy and just be open a bit more.

Good decision.

No girl is worth that much trouble, even if she was interested.

She knows who you are, and how to contact you.

To me, it sounds like she is not interested, full stop.

Besides, I’m pretty sure all your actions are based on the ‘luvvy duvvy’ feelings, rather than her suitability to be a wonderful wife and mother (but this is not a criticism, just an observation).

I did the same, years ago. I knew a beautiful girl through family friends. I sent her birthday cards and a gift. Loads of texts back and forth between us on the mobile phone. Then, after a couple of months, I got bored of the games (and trying to understand text messages and their actual meaning) and gave up. A couple of years later, she turned up at the house (having since moved out of the area), and I left her well alone, only for her to specifically come back into the house when she was leaving to give me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek and say goodbye. It was a pretty small thing, but left me wondering a little 🤷

Then, cue her trying to contact ME on MSN messenger and through emails.

As others have said, she will make it clear 👍

In Jesus Christ,

I’ve read all the posts.

I think there’s something there which rings the romantic tone, but as far as something which would warrant a relationship goes, yup…
Pass on this for now and wait. 6 years have gone by - if it was meant to be, she would show more interest.
Indeed. I remember her alluding, dodging, slowing it down, while never brushing off my advances and occasionally letting something show. So I guess it’s been some but not enough. But I’m not going to analyse this one. Sometimes even I feel the need to let people remain their human selves without being analysed. This begins to be one of such cases.
I think perhaps your quickness to want to pick up where you left off and then some may have been preventing you from being open to discovering the woman that she is today.
Agreed.
perhaps your desire for something exclusive is based more on past regrets than the current reality.
Yes, it definitely was. Took me a while to slow down and realise that it simply won’t cut it.
Hopefully taking this little bit of a break will give you the chance to recharge your energy and just be open a bit more.
Yes. I do feel freer now. On so many levels.

No girl is worth that much trouble, even if she was interested.
I don’t even know that, actually. Maybe she’s worth all that trouble and even much more? And maybe whoever takes all that trouble will be rewarded? At this point I just can’t take any more of it. I wonder what makes it that my friends will be so charmed and some will go quite romantic with me (except the core substance of it, that is), but ultimately it simply never works out. However, I have every reason to believe or even be certain that so far it’s been for the best. So maybe I’ve got more grace than reason and who knows if it isn’t my family’s prayers keeping me from trouble? Those small misfortunes I’m sometimes so inclined to complain about might well have been much bigger, sore calamities, leading perhaps to a nasty divorce years after. All this has been spared me. For this I’m grateful. I think I should stop whining. It does feel like I’m getting much better treatment than I’m able to realise.
She knows who you are, and how to contact you.
Yup. Full well.
To me, it sounds like she is not interested, full stop.
Indeed. She isn’t actively disinterested, but her lack of interest or response is debilitating. It has led me even to thinking that well, maybe she isn’t all that. It’s just a pity it couldn’t all have concluded in some nobler way, for friendship or whatever else.
Besides, I’m pretty sure all your actions are based on the ‘luvvy duvvy’ feelings, rather than her suitability to be a wonderful wife and mother (but this is not a criticism, just an observation).
Rather an inclination, although the whole “game” began to suck me in. I remained hanging in the air to some extent until I learnt about the state of her affairs with the Church. Seeing the same picture of Our Lord in her wallet as I had in mine was also quite a powerful experience, but after that meeting it didn’t go so well. The meeting somehow fit in the continuum of what was before. What followed after the meeting didn’t.

And what followed after the meeting made me think I wasn’t really interested in going there. I just don’t feel like convincing another girl to change her mind about me for who knows how long. Wouldn’t be fair to anyone who might be or have been actually interested in me at any point in the present, past or future. I’m sure even without any specific feelings, other good women would be more receptive in this situation and on some abstract level, it wouldn’t be fair on them. Perhaps it’s all just generally unfair in some way.

How did it turn out? Ironically, in my case, the girl both initiated the cheek kissing (six years ago) and stopped it (now). I don’t feel like exchanging such gesture with someone who’s not inclined (the symbolics of it are pretty big), so I’m not going to try after seeing her go away without bothering. As much as it was a surprise to me that she kissed me on the cheek for the flowers, her further actions did much to kill the effect. At this point I don’t even feel inclined to wonder. I’ve started praying more for my future wife or whatever calling I’ll find, and everything feels much better this way. And the less I wonder, the better I am.
Then, cue her trying to contact ME on MSN messenger and through emails.

In Jesus Christ,
Thank you. 🙂 In fact, I’m rather skeptical now and I’d be much happier to meet someone genuinely receptive. Or find a priestly calling. Whatever calling where I’m actually wanted. I don’t need a relationship with that friend to be happy. I may sound cruel now, I know, but I think I’m not really.

As it turned out, I didn’t like who she had become. Strange, huh? 😛 (In fact, as a result of this thread, I looked her profile up on one the social networking websites, and she is now going to university very nearby to me!! Unfortunately, it also confirmed that the type of person she has now become means that the only attraction remaining is a vague physical attraction, and even that has waned greatly).

But at the time, when it was I who was infatuated with her, I would have climbed Everest just to be with her, which is I think how you feel right now.

In hindsight, I can’t understand it, or my actions. Which is why I quipped that in reality, no girl is worth that much effort. I actually can sort of understand it, given the enormous feelings one can experience towards members of the opposite sex, but… women can be trouble aswell!!

😉 I’ve only experienced unhappy marriages as I have grown up, so I am pretty skeptical of male/female compatibility at the moment 😃

If you can figure it out, let me know 👍 🤷

Sad thing indeed. Happens sometimes to me. I was always old when I was younger and now I’m the one whom friends tell, “you haven’t changed at all.” Perhaps I’m capable of being too young and too old at the same time… I don’t know, I just seem to have a stronger connection with the past than most people.
But at the time, when it was I who was infatuated with her, I would have climbed Everest just to be with her, which is I think how you feel right now.
Hehe. Maybe until a while ago, but not now. 😉 I would take a bullet for her but I wouldn’t ask her to reconsider a once declined invitation.

I think some are. Or maybe all of them are, but not every relationship is? I’d do a lot for one, but bringing down a wall of unwillingness is quite much.

Aye. 😉

Sure thing. 😃
