From time to time put up teasers and humor to keep people interrested.

Beginning of Term, book buying

Ecclesiastes 12:12
And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

Cramming for Final Exams

Daniel 7:10
A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

End of Term,

Acts 19:19
Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Test Prayer,

Philippians 4:6-8
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.
Yo, I fell out laughing about these!!! Genius!!! 😃 Thank you for the biggest laugh of my day :D:bowdown2::rotfl:

**John 14:1 **Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me.

**Mark 10:14 **When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

So many; I hope you really start something 👍

Good Morning, College Girl!

The idea of posting the readings for the day is an excellent one as well as quotes from some of the Saints that are especially well thought of.

“We can do no great things. Only small things with great love.” -Mother Teresa

-the above is my current facebook status. Most everyone loves Mother Teresa and who can argue with that quote?!?

Also, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our souls are restless until they rest in you.” -Saint Augustine

-sounds like it describes some of the students and faculty at your school.😊

Honestly, as an older student, I resent your biased remarks about St. Edwards. I think it is uncharitable to say the ‘Enemy’ is working at a school that has taught and given me so much. Do you want to go to a school where everyone thinks the same as you? The school is diverse. They don’t hide the fact that only about 40% of the students who attend identify as Catholic. The school (thankfully) does not require that professors who teach identify as Catholic, but instead that they be qualified.

It doesn’t appear to me that you’ve spoken with any faculty about your concerns yet. Do it. You’re in college. Be brave; you won’t survive in the real world if you don’t.
Thanks for labeling me while knowing nothing about me or my experience here. I think there is some biases going on here and its not from me.

To the other posters with legitamate posts, thank you so much! My quote about the nature about true love was erased. But I will keep trying! I have enough quotes to last me the last five weeks here before I transfer! I will keep trying to bring the gospel to the kids here!

Even though I go to a Catholic University, strong faith and formation are few and far between. I try to evangelize by speaking up in my theology classes and having long talks with my friends, But I’ve thought of a new way I could bring people some of the bible.

We all have dry erase boards on our doors, and I was wanting to write scripture on mine so that anyone walking by would be forced to read some kind of verse every week and hopefully something will sink in one day!

But I just don’t even know where to being in picking something accessible that could reach out to so many confused and searching students, and I’m afraid some of my favorite verses might be too complex or Catholic to be immediately accessible…

So please I would love some suggestions on some great verses that I could bring to the people on my floor and anyone else who passes by! Thanks so much!
That’s what I did in my Catholic dorm. Sadly I left the Catholic church at that time, I thought I was the odd one!

Any verse! I update my fb status often with bible verses, often from today’s Mass readings. Since you are Catholic at a Catholic University, why don’t you show your classmates how our faith is living and active, by reading the Mass readings online in the morning, and if/when something jumps out to you, write it on your board for your own edification. YOur board is like your bumper sticker. You pick what speaks to you. Who knows, maybe someone else might take an interest and start doing it too!

GOd bless and keep you strong in your Catholic faith.

Thanks so much! That is such a good idea. Its such a nice way of finding a new one everyday, I havent really changed it since it got erased. 😦

College Girl,

Glad to see you post again. I 🙂 was afraid that the uncharitable post may have kept you from returning to the thread.

I looked at your blog (good, btw) and it struck me that taking a couple (or as many fit easily on the board) of lines from the Mother Teresa poem you posted on March 27th, and writing them every day until it is finished, might be good.

I sometimes put quotes on my Face Book, and I’ve noticed that Bible quotes do not really go down well – or at least nobody wants to publicly “like” or comment on them. On the other hand, quotes from somebody like GK Chesterton or JRR Tolkien seem to strike a chord with many, even non-professing Christians. Just a thought. 🙂

I agree, I think saint quotes could possibly go over well. Especially since some of the modern almost saints, Like John Paul and Mother Teresa address some of the issues the people in my dorms are dealing with directly, (impurity for example). Now I’m getting a little more adventurous and thinking about putting maybe both a saint quote and a bible verse, but thinking about moving a white board I have inside outside for more room! Maybe I should keep it small still? I’m not really sure!

Verses? No problemo!

Matthew 7: 15] "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
16] You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17] So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit.
18] A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19] Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20] Thus you will know them by their fruits.
21] "Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. **22**] On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’
23] And then will I declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’

Matthew 25:31] “When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
32] Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
33] and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.
34] Then the King will say to those at his right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; **35**] for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, **36**] I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' **37**] Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?
38] And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?
39] And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’
40] And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' **41**] Then he will say to those at his left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
42] for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
44] Then they also will answer, Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' **45**] Then he will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’
46] And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

James 2:1] My brethren, show no partiality as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.
2] For if a man with gold rings and in fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in,
3] and you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “Have a seat here, please,” while you say to the poor man, “Stand there,” or, “Sit at my feet,”
4] have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
5] Listen, my beloved brethren. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
6] But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you, is it not they who drag you into court?
7] Is it not they who blaspheme that honorable name which was invoked over you?
8] If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.
9] But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
10] For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
11] For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” said also, “Do not kill.” If you do not commit adultery but do kill, you have become a transgressor of the law.
12] So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.
13] For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment.
14] What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him?
15] If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food,
16] and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit?
17] So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
18] But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
19] You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe – and shudder.
20] Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren?

James 3:1] Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness.
2] For we all make many mistakes, and if any one makes no mistakes in what he says he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
3] If we put bits into the mouths of horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies.
4] Look at the ships also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.
5] So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire!
6] And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell.
7] For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by humankind,
8] but no human being can tame the tongue – a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9] With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God.
10] From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so.
11] Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and brackish?
12] Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.
13] Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good life let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

James 4:1] What causes wars, and what causes fightings among you? Is it not your passions that are at war in your members?
2] You desire and do not have; so you kill. And you covet and cannot obtain; so you fight and wage war. You do not have, because you do not ask.
3] You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
4] Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
5] Or do you suppose it is in vain that the scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit which he has made to dwell in us”?
6] But he gives more grace; therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
7] Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
8] Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind.
9] Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to dejection.
10] Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.
11] Do not speak evil against one another, brethren. He that speaks evil against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
12] There is one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you that you judge your neighbor?

Matthew 5:14] "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.
15] Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
17] "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.
18] For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.
19] Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20] For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
21] "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' **22**] But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire.
23] So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24] leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25] Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison;
26] truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.
27] "You have heard that it was said, `You shall not commit adultery.’
28] But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matthew 12:17] This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
18] “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19] He will not wrangle or cry aloud,
nor will any one hear his voice in the streets;
20] he will not break a bruised reed
or quench a smoldering wick,
till he brings justice to victory;
21] and in his name will the Gentiles hope.”

Matthew 12:30] He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.
31] Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
32] And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
33] “Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.
34] You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
35] The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.
36] I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter;
37] for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

These should get you started

How good of you to undertake this initiative! Perhaps God has placed you in that rotten college for just such a purpose! (He has His ways! ;))

From Sydney, Down Under, I’d like to suggest just one word which you might want to use. That word is “Eternity”. Write it with a flourish, and leave it up there for as long as you can. It’s sure to upset a lot of people’s laid back daily rhythms! 😃

Read about its wonderfully effective use here in Sydney (without being “preachy” at all):

God love you.

This site has many verses available in 4 translations including NASB.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NASB)
No temptation has overtaken you but such as
is common to man; and God is faithful, who
will not allow you to be tempted beyond what
you are able, but with the temptation will
provide the way of escape also, that you may
be able to endure it.

or from the Message:
Proverbs 3:5-6 (MSG)
Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for GOD’S voice in everything you do,
everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep
you on track.

Well. I came back to my room today to find that some one had written “Lol. What?” on my white board. I wasn’t really frustrated or upset about that untill I realized they had written this in permanent marker and made slash marks over what I had written (I can do all things through Him who strengthens me). They were small and granted I didn’t see these untill I had erased what I wrote but I am still discouraged some one tried to mark out what I wrote. I tried to get the markings off as best I could, and then I put a new verse up (Phil. 4:4-7). 🤷 I’m more than a little frustrated… but thanks for all the help, I won’t let this stop me!

Aw… disappointing. Especially in a Catholic school. (Just curious-- what kind of spiritual health strengtheners are offered in the dorms? Do you pray together or study Scripture together? I went to a secular state school, but an acquaintance who went to a Protestant college told me they had prayer and study groups going on in their dorms. I think attendance was mandatory).

I said a prayer for the person who did that-- you might want to, too. 😉
And I pray that the Lord keeps your faith strong. 🙂
