So my girlfriend and I have been dating for almost a year now. We are both very devout Catholics, but before I met her she struggled with depression and self harm. When I met her we both fell in love with each other and more so with God. We were both living such great lives until about 5 months ago when I moved 18 hours away. Ever sense then we have been making this long distance relationship work and it has been really great and we have grown so much more closer together. But recently she has been struggling with depression and self harming thoughts again. Now I helped her out of it before, but this time I’m really scared because I’m not there to help her and support her physically, just over video chat. I really am needing advice on how I can help her with being so far away. Thanks

Tell her to get some help from a professional who can be there to monitor her. I know you want to help as much as possible, but this is out of your hands.

Help her by getting her professional help and praying for and with her.

Your girlfriend needs professional help. Also, she can call the national suicide hotline, as someone else suggested.

Thank you all for the replys. We have talked about it and she is not suicidal nor would she self harm ever again, so I don’t think that we need to get that extreme. She is just struggling with life right now and I just ideas on how I can help her to be happier.

She should still speak to a professional. Depression isn’t a matter of just needing to be happier. A number of things can cause depression, not necessarily major depression, both medically and psychologically. These types of things can be cyclical and some cycles can be worse than others.

Yes. The problem is that although you can do things to make her happy, she needs to find things for herself that she can rely on - exercising, for example. Something that can make her happy which doesn’t depend on location or another person.

Definitely tell her to get some professional help, and encourage her to talk to someone about how she’s feeling, who can assess and help her.

Get her involved in a DBT group.

Or better, a cognitive behavioral therapist who is Christian.
