Needing Prayers due to Flu Shot Side Affects

Dear Catholic Answers Community:

I would like some prayers for my family. Also for myself, as I had a flu shot a few days ago and am not feeling well. 😦

Prayer for a Miracle

God of all creation, you who spoke a simple command and brought forth light from
the darkness, I ask you now to send forth your miracle-working power to heal daponte2. You cleansed the lepers, opened the eyes of the blind and by
speaking a simple command, you empowered the crippled to rise up and walk.
You sent forth your life-giving power to all those in need, including those you raised from
the dead. I ask you to send forth your healing power into daponte2’s body and give him the strength to fight his illness. I ask this through my Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have much more than just soreness at the injection site at this point, chances are you caught the flu prior to getting the shot. The shot is a dead virus, so it won’t pass the flu even if it tried. However, with flu season in full swing there are plenty of opportunities to catch it before or right after the shot before your body has a chance to develop immunity.

A lot of people don’t know that flu vaccines become available around September. At the end of next summer, call your doctor’s office and ask when the first shipment is expected. If you get the vaccine right at the beginning of the season you are more likely to have developed immunity before you encounter it. That’s why doctors and nurses often get their shot as soon as they get a shipment in and before patients start coming in with the flu.

I recommend getting back to the doctor ASAP. If caught early you can start Tamiflu! If it’s past the time limit to start Tamiflu then you’ll get symptom relievers only and you’ll also want to spend some quality time with your couch and TV for a few days. Stay hydrated. That’s important!

Good point. If a person has an egg allergy/sensitivity it can also cause problems. My family found that out only recently and no longer get the flu vaccine. Prior to that my poor son felt sick after being vaccinated for several years.

The usual symptoms can include aches and pains and even chills - mild though. It is possible to have a reaction (usually resembling a bad cold, or even something called Guillan Barre Syndrome), but they are very very very rare. I am not too familiar with American health care, but when you go in for your flu shot next year, discuss the symptoms you have right now just in case it becomes an issue again in the future. Even as nurses we try to get our flu shots at the end of our work week because we know we’ll feel kind of yucky for a few days.
