They can’t say they made a mistake because they don’t believe that they did. We can’t expect them to say something they do not honestly believe.The problem here is pride. Right now they can’t see why they can’t just say they made a mistake and ask the Church to reinstate them. And as long as they have parishioners, they will have a false sense of justice on their side.
For what it’s worth, it is not at all clear to me that they made a mistake. I find the situation far too complicated to consider such a conclusion obvious. So it seems unlikely to me that this is a matter of people being too proud to admit a mistake.
