Neighbor Says Church Bells Helped Destroy His Marriage

A Narragansett man has gone to federal court to silence church bells sounded by a neighboring Catholic church.

The Providence Journal reports that John Devaney says in his lawsuit that the bells of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish disrupt his life and contributed to the end of his marriage.

He is asking the court to order the church to reduce the number of bell claps and gongs so he can peacefully enjoy his property.

I’d really like to see the follow-up on this, and how it all plays out. Psychologically, I think it could be possible that if he was having problems in his life that were unravelling, the scenario could have become associated with the sound of the bell in some way. Then, the sound of the bell would perpetuate negative feelings.

I’m thinking like Pavlov, a few of those dogs, and that bell of his.

Well, as much as I’ve guffawed as this man’s lawsuit, I can sort of relate to that.

I live in a university area, and to ensure quiet and the church bell is very rarely rung. The mosque isn’t allowed to use loudspeakers to call people for prayer. Even the ambulance isn’t allowed to turn on its siren.

Well, as much as I’ve guffawed as this man’s lawsuit, I can sort of relate to that.

The bells in that Rhode Island parish ring first at 8:45 am, which is pretty late considering the Angelus usually rings much earlier. Last ring at 6 p.m. And it tolls for funerals and weddings.

Now I have to admit that I stood in the square outside St. Peter’s Abbey in Salzburg recently as the bells rang calling the faithful to Mass and it was deafening. But the ringing was constant for at least 15 minutes and we were in a walled square so the sound bounced everywhere.

Well there isn’t much traffic, and you’ll see the ambulance lights. Although I have witnessed a case where a car refused to give way to an ambulance behind it, possibly he didn’t noticed that there was an ambulance behind!
