Has anyone ever heard or participated in the Neocatechumenal Way? I have and let me tell you it’s great.

I knew of it in a parish I once belonged to. We used to call it “Fr Paul’s Commando Course.” It’s focus was very ‘gospel’, going back to grass-roots Catholicism. Certainly an enthusiastic following. One of the young men became a priest associated with the movement.

I have,

It was a kind of strange experience, not very traditional, somewhat ‘dumbed down’, for a catechisis at least

We also have the neocat community in our parish but it has caused nothing but division. It has got so bad over the past few year that the Japanese bishops finally went to Rome earlier this year to discuss the serious problems it has caused and to have the associated Redemptoris Mater seminary closed.
You can read the report below and at the link included. When permission was granted by the Pope the Neocat way asked another bishop in Japan to allow it to continue in his diocese. He initiailly aproved but after a discussion with our bishop and archbishop in Osaka, he declined.

ROME (UCAN) – In an extraordinary move, the Japanese Bishops’ Conference sent a delegation last week to discuss with Pope Benedict XVI “the serious problem” they are having with the Neocatechumenal Way and its seminary in Takamatsu diocese**.

“Another matter would be The Neocatechumenal Way (the Way) and the International Takamatsu Diocesan Seminary known as Redemptoris Mater. We have here a serious problem. In the small Catholic Church of Japan, the powerful sect-like activity of Way members is divisive and confrontational. It has caused sharp painful division and strife within the Church. We are struggling with all our strength to overcome the problem but feel that if a solution is to be found, the consideration of Your Holiness for the Church in Japan will be of the utmost importance and direly needed.”
“The diocesan seminary is to be ended. The Holy See has agreed that it be closed as a diocesan seminary this year,” he said.
The bishops, he explained, continue to have “serious and deep” problems with the movement that relate to its “way of thinking” and its “attitude” to Japanese culture, liturgy and other issues.

The “Way” as we call it is a great way to learn the faith. When a team came to my parish they taught us catechesis about a whole lot of things. And yeah they kinda do go back to the roots of christianity. It’s great. I highly recommend it. The group has also been highly approved by John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

I think we are blessed to have so many new, approved movements in the Church. It’s a gift.

Surely there’s been others who’ve heard of or experienced the neocatechumenal way.

I have participated.

It is a motivating experience. One that let’s me grow in my faith with every participation. The teaching of humility, to live your life lifting your cross and accepting it.

It’s life changing. I’d recommend it to any serious Catholic.
