Is it ok to attend the Neochatechuminal Way Mass? I’m in a situation where I sortof must. I don’t like receiving in the hand, nor that we don’t kneel, nor a number of other things, but atm I need to keep going. I know the whole thing kind of gets murky, but I’m not in sin receiving the communion in their way am I?
 
The Neocatechuminal Way has the approval of Rome. If you are not comfortable (I would not be), simply attend a different Mass.
 
There were a lot of things I did not like about it, but it is definitely not sinful. The intention of it is to celebrate in a way that more closely resembles the very first Mass, the Last Supper, and all of the early Christian communities.

This line concerns me. Are you a minor and your parents are requiring it? It’s fine for parents to require their kids to attend mass.

However, if you are an independent adult, you don’t have to do any of it if you don’t want to, and it sounds like you don’t want to.

Someone has previously posted here about feeling they were being forced to attend these masses or they would face some consequence that was akin to be shunned. That is out of bounds.

If you feel at all threatened by anyone, get help.
 
I do not know much about them. I know one of our bishops has banned them in his diocese and another has issued norms he requires them to follow regarding the Church’s liturgical norms.
 
No, it’s not obligated. I am a legal adult, but for the sake of my younger siblings I must slowly “phase” out of going. It’s a complicated family situation, obviously there’s more to it. So don’t worry, it’s not a cult, I’m not in any sort of situation like that. But thanks for the concern!
 
Oh, good. I’m glad you aren’t being forced. I can understand now why you said what you said, and I think it is very prudent for you to phase out slowly. As has been said already, there isn’t anything sinful about the way, but it’s definitely not to everyone’s taste.
 
Yes, my only real problem is the Eucharist. I am quite a traditonal Catholic now, and I do attribute that to the way because it has a lot of traditional elements depsite first glance. But I really can’t stand the way they celebrate the Eucharist, especially the way we recieve communion. Ah, how complicated these things can be…
 
I “had to go” to a Neochatechuminical Way Mass once. Due to work on Saturday and flight schedule home on Sunday, my only choice was the latest Saturday Vigil Mass in Denver.
I found a lot to like, and a lot to dislike; particularly a “Quaker Meeting” style homily, and being told to hold the Most Holy Eucharist in my hand so that Celebrant and congregation could all receive at the same moment. I was compliant with everything.
Afterward, while they were pretending to do Israeli folk dances, Father sent a woman after me in the parking lot, to tell me not to come back, because they don’t welcome non-members of their community.

😲 Of all the things I’ve ever heard the NcW accused of, this is by far the most egregious. 😡 The Church’s liturgy should never be a private/exclusive club and never used as a tool of inhospitable treatment.

ETA: Reading elsewhere on the topic, I found this from their own documents (emphasis mine):
“the celebrations of the Eucharist of the neocatechumenal communities on Saturday evening are part of the Sunday liturgical pastoral work of the parish and are open also to other faithful.”

Oh well that’s odd. One aspect I don’t like is that it’s too freelance. For instance, the communities here I attend, they invite non members with open arms always. Even the cookly hobo who walked on in and somehow dressed up as a priest and tried conducting his own liturgy during Mass. Literally everyone. It all depends on the Catechists of the parish and of the region. It’s kinda protestant in my opinion. I’m glad at least I attend a parish that’s pretty level headed and traditional compared to other parishes.
