Hello. It is my understanding that a recent convert to Catholicism has to wait a certain period of time before becoming a priest. Does anybody happen to know how long that waiting time is, or have any more details on this? Thanks.

Mike

i think it is as soon as the local bishop says. i do know however that if you were previously clergy of another faith, you have to wait longer than if you were a non-catholic paritioner

At one time, it was one year. I think that that part is still correct, but as was stated earlier, the local Bishop can set a longer standard.

One of the things a lot of dioceses guard against is the neophyte’s notion that because they’ve become Catholic, they ought to go on to being priests. It’s like a “honeymoon” period for a lot of people after conversion, and like all honeymoons, it ends sooner or later.

A lasting commitment to the priesthood can still be in the neophyte, however, so for those who feel it, I’d say stick with it, feel it out, look at it from different angles, take advantage of the sacraments, and pray pray pray. And if it all still feels right after the minimum period, see a vocations director.

The canon law relating to requirements for ordination begin here. Canon 1042 3° contains the neophyte rule.

Again, thank you all for your help. I’ll keep ya guys posted as to what becomes of this. 🙂

So, what ever happened to this?

Interestingly enough, i know a 14 year old who converted from nothing (just him, no family, though they are supportive) because he felt a call to be a catholic priest. And personally, he is a pretty cool guy.
