Hi, I’m new in my study of scripture. Does anyone out there happen to know what the Church teaches about the “Nephalum” that are mentioned in Genesis. How should I be looking at what this is about? Or hasn’t the Church actually made any comments about it one way or another?

If anyone has a legitimate link or something please help me. Thank you.

God bless.

Do you mean “nephilim”? Aren’t those fallen angels or something?

Nephuilim"ancient heroes, men of renown" born of the union of the sons of Elohim(angels) and the daughters of humans Gen 6

The nephilim were"ancient heroes, men of renown" born of the union of the sons of elohim(angels) and daughters of men.(Gen 6:1-4)Could be a piece of an ancient myth which was used as a prelude to the story of the Flood…Pre israelites of the promised land are also identified with the Nephilim(Nm13:33) and other giants.Get yourself a bible dictionary like"dictionary of the bible" by John McKenzie,S.J. where i got this info from.

From the Haydock Commentary:
Ver. 4. Giants. It is likely the generality of men before the flood were of a gigantic stature, in comparison with what men now are. But these here spoken of, are called giants, as being not only tall in stature, but violent and savage in their dispositions, and mere monsters of cruelty and lust. (Challoner) — Yet we need not imagine, that they were such as the poets describe, tearing up mountains, and hurling them against heaven. Being offspring of men, who had lived hitherto with great temperance, but now gave full scope to their passions, and the love of the fair daughters whom they chose, we need not wonder that they should be amazingly strong and violent. Nephilim, rushing on, as Ag. translates. That there have been giants of an unusual size, all historians testify. Og, Goliah, &c. are mentioned in Scripture, and the sons of Enac are represented as much above the common size, as the Hebrews were greater than grasshoppers, Numbers xiii. 34. If we should suppose they were four or five times our size, would that be more wonderful that they should live nine or ten times as long as we do? See St. Augustine, City of God xv. 9, 23; Calmet’s Dissert. &c. Delrio affirms, that in 1572 he saw at Rouen, a native of Piedmont, above nine feet high. (Haydock) — Of old. The corruption of morals had commenced many ages ago, and some of the sons of Seth had given way to their lusts; so that we are not to suppose, that these giants were all born within a hundred years of the flood, as some might suppose from their being mentioned here, after specifying the age of Noe, chap. v. 31. (Haydock)

*Gen 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown. *

(Elohim is the plural form used for God in the OT)

The “sons of God” is an expression applicable to those who are faithful/adhere to God. (eg Wisdom 5:1-5;Romans 8:14)
The line of Seth.

The “sons of men” is sometimes used to designate those who have rejected God and live very sinful lives. (eg Ps 12:7-8)
The line of Cain.

The Genesis 6 passage would then refer to how the men of Seth’s line began marrying the women from the line of Cain. A pattern that would continue to crop up later when the Jews would take wives from the pagan nations.

Hi all gen chp 6 Is tough.Because it translates Sons of GOD
Capital G for a reason.Because it relates to God above. To me
its a question Ill ask when I get to heaven.Ive went around and around on this.Ive been told its fallen angels,I dont belive it was
because Angels cant recreate fallen or not.Ive been told they are
men such as Kings called Sons of God.For me that dont fit ethier
because we run into translations problems. And of course they bore
Giants,Left field claim they was aliens,Ha There simply isnt enough data for myself to conclude.Jesus had brothers God only had one begot (BORN INTO MAN) Son Jesus was the choosen son.Its hard to tack down, for sure absolute.Iam sure the Pope
would probly say only whats written which in my view its not enough info. to conclude.Of course we have dinosur bones but no
giant man bones in the region which we speak dateing to the time
frame.theres many theories.Cain bloodline which only could be same women cain found. But not much on SONS Of GOD.

The nephilims are beings from Bible, but also mentioned in some other Old Testament texts which are not part of the canon ( I believe, not even the Jewish one ).

These beings, humans of gigantic size, were borned because certain angels slept with human females. These half-angels, half-humans were very evil in nature, which opens many questions of their life and purpose.

Nephilims were gigantic, and had two pairs of jaws. I recall, but you should check it yourself, that nephilims became extinct in The Flood- and I also read somewhere that Goliath was considered nephilim ( which would mean they haven’t go extinct ).

The word nephilim means “strong man”.
