"Net Nanny"

Hello, I’m not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question in, but it looks like the closest I could find…

I do not have children, therefore I have not used any of the “net nanny” software. A neighbor is getting a computer and asked if I could help her setup software to block access to “certain sites” and protect against IM’s, etc. I have been trying to researching different software to see what is the best (both cost and effectiveness wise). Just wondering if any of you have some products to recommend?

While I have no experience with the K9 product, I do with Net Nanny. Net Nanny is excellent! It even allows remote (over the Internet) monitoring. While there are inevitable false positives (like some of the thread on this forum), the exception list is easy to handle and can also be approved or disapproved remotely.
 
I have personal experience with BSafe Online, and I would highly recommend it.
 
We had the Net Nanny for a while… did block random things like target.com because it sold women’s underclothes. And if the kids in question know anything about computers- net nanny is easy to get around with a proxy server. So if proxies can be blocked, that would solve that issue.
 
K9 is made by Blue Coat which is the proxy / content filter used by most of the Fortune 500 companies. I and a number of Network Security engineers have used the K9 product as home for years. It’s free, VERY easy to setup and work well. It uses the same filter blue coat sells (at a premium I might add) to corporations.

I set mine up to block primarily porn, malware etc… there are global settings or you can do it manually. There have only been a few downloadable game sites I have had to manually add (which is just typing in the password and allow or always allow).

Very happy and you can’t be free!

Back in the 90s I designed out the Internet Network for one of the major cellular networks. This wasn’t offered back then and we bundled NetNanny with our software… while I’m sure it’s better now, it was easily circumvented back then and I know our help desk got TONS of calls about it. For what it’s worth I wasn’t impressed at all with that software.
