Well at one time it was thought these abusers could be cured and that was from the psychiatric association. Even teachers in schools were rehired when they came out of treatment and assigned to schools again. Now we know they will go back to abusing.

In our parish and city they have a program every adult has to go through that has any dealings with children. It’s mandatory. I think people now know enough to watch and report any suspicious things they see. Parents teach their children differently now about these things than back in the 60s.

My niece was married by a priest who was caught abusing children. He was sent to prison and served his time. Her marriage is still valid. These men have to answer to God and as the bible says their punishment will be harsher since they acted in God’s place with his church.

BUT religion is about repenting. We know God’s mercy is offered to all of us for repenting and not sinning again. God will deal with these sinners I am sure. We will never know how or if they repented and were forgiven.

Yes, this is true. I also wondered when watching the series if the Church officials had assumed based on Maskell’s alleged abuse of a young boy at St. Clement’s that his issue was an attraction to boys only and therefore they “solved” the problem by assigning him to an all-girls’ school where he would not be in contact with young boys. We now know that many abusers will harm children of both genders.

Interesting point! I had not thought of that. You could be right.

It’s not that simple when it’s a priest. They act “in persona Christi”, as in they are Christ’s representative on Earth. When they’re also the one engaging in heinous acts… Well lets just say it calls many’s belief into question that someone who is supposed to be acting in place of Christ is also abusing children in unspeakable ways. For many it is akin to Christ himself engaging in the abuse. And if you view Christ as abusive… would you really want to hang around him any longer? This to me is the biggest issue with these disgusting priests who engaged in this behavior, not only were they abusing the children, but they were abusing Christ and those children’s faith in him.

Add on to that an organization that claim’s to be Christ’s one true church on Earth, even if made up of sinners, acting in a manner akin to a multiple stage government coverup ostensibly for no reason other than to “avoid scandal” as if what has been going on isn’t a vile scandal already. It’s not that they didn’t know what everyone was doing at all time, it’s that they didn’t act when they did become aware of it. Any priest accused of abuse should have been reported to the authorities and taken out of his church indefinitely while it was investigated, and when abuse was found, they should have been summarily thrown out of the priesthood. Not sent to “treatment centers”, quiet payoffs made, and then put the priest back in circulation to engage in the behavior again. Even an imperfect and flawed institution should know to not do that.
This has been my argument since the scandals came to light. The very fact that Catholicism teaches that priests act as Christ (yet not Christ himself, obviously) causes spiritual strain on a person who is abused by a priest with that amount of authority and power. This is not teachers molesting children – which is, of course, a heinous act as well, please don’t misunderstand – this is a priest who acts with a large amount of authority from God himself, and if God himself is leading these priests to do what they do (which is how a child sees this), then how else is a child supposed to view God but as abusive and evil? It is a very sickening spiritual attack on the soul of a child.

We are all sinners, that’s a fact. But if a Church is truly the one true Church founded by God himself, then surely it wouldn’t be that difficult for it to stop and realize that attemtping to hide evil doesn’t wash it away but further allows for it to continue on.

We just finished watching this over the past two nights.

This is my archdiocese. I am appalled, I am disgusted, I am outraged.

They will not get another dime from us. My home parish, we will support, but not the annual appeal or anything the archdiocese asks for.

I looked up the accused/abuse list too. In shuffling the priests around, I see that St. Marks had a high number of abuse case priests. 3 churches in my area had several cases.

**What I will say **is what Tis bearself mentioned earlier. “The Church” is not the administrators, or even people that fail to be what they should be. The Church is what Catholics believe. The Sacraments. The saints. Everything we believe in the Catechism.

And that is probably what is so disturbing. That clergy and administrators that profess to believe the same things that all Catholics believe, could be so vile, so dishonest, and so misleading.

I am so disturbed by what I watched. We must keep all of the victims and their families in our prayers. Pray for them and for peace in their lives.

And for those that are writing about what they think, or what they heard this show is about but have not seen it: watch it. Have your eyes opened. This show did not contain Catholic faith bashing. It did expose the city of Baltimore, the Archdiocese, and some incompetent administrators and priests that should have been stopped and prosecuted.

Well said. It must be painful if it is in your diocese. I know in my diocese before I joined the Catholic church there was a lot of sex abuse scandals in several of the churches. It bothered me to see it happening. I couldn’t understand why it was happening. I did notice when Pope Benedict XVI became Pope, the Catholic church began dealing with it. I joined the Catholic church in July of 2008 after our Diocese got a new Bishop assigned to clean up the mess. And he has done a good job. It still bothers me when I hear or read about other cases though. I am just glad that the cases finally came out in the open so the shuffling of priests to different churches or diocese or states was stopped. I can’t imagine how betrayed victims must feel.

I don’t know why God set it up to confess to priests, makes me wonder. It does set up some people to be abusers of the worse kind. Knowing others deepest secrets and can prey on it.

Jesus did say for those who represent him and do harm it would be better for them if a millstone be tied around their necks and thrown into the river. These priests sure deserved it. Too bad it only comes when they die. The victims are left in shambles.

Why does the Archdiocese of Baltimore continue denying that it knew of any abuse before 1992? I don’t understand it at all. I would actually have respect for them if they would quit with the lying and own up to all the abuse that was known about and hushed up.

It has been days now since we watched the series, and we are all still disturbed by it. If you really want to see more of the same from the archdiocese, check out their web and Twitter pages. It is sickening what happened, and for them to act like all of these people made up their stories is just pure evil.

But I will state again, this is the Archdiocese of Baltimore, **not The Catholic Church. **The archdiocese is the group of people that are employed there, that were priests there, but the are not The Catholic Church. What they say does not speak for The Church. It speaks of their own blackened souls, not the **Truth **of The Church.

And this is the oldest Archdiocese in our country. It was the first correct?

You are correct. This is just one Archdiocese, and I am trying my hardest not to let it influence me. For years I have been so drawn to the Church in a way I cannot explain with words. Even when the scandals first came to light, I was still just as drawn to it, but I’m very cautious because this is a serious matter. I don’t want to join just for the sake of joining – I want to join because I feel 100% in my heart that this is right. Now it’s even harder. I cannot help but wonder how on earth this has been allowed to happen and who all truly knew about it? It’s very difficult for me to believe that the knowledge of the abuse did not go further up in the hierarchy, and because of that, I’m at a standstill. I have people in my family who were abused (not by clergy), and the thought of someone or a group of people keeping this a secret while continuing to allow it to happen is absolutely heart-wrenching. Just being on the “outside,” my first response would be to dissociate from the problem source.

My apologies if anything I say comes across as disrespectful. I don’t mean to be disrespectful of anyone or the faith. 😔

Nothing disrespectful being said IMO. Believe me many Catholics and former Catholics I know asked the same questions when the scandals first came to light. The scandals themselves were bad enough, but it was the coverups, willful or ignorant, that really put people over the edge.

Me, too. But it seemed to be the way he filled his days.
He was only there for a few months it seems. Hopefully he didn’t find time to build a network to exploit children in the way he seems to have done in the US.

Absolutely despicable man.

The article I linked to above said he was in private practice in Ireland from 1995-1998. You are right, he was despicable. I cannot imagine how he could have lived with himself. He strikes me as not only being despicable, but arrogant as well. Let’s face it, he ran from the U.S. because the heat was on him. But not enough to just fade into oblivion.
