I found one of those Novena slips in the chapel. it concludes with:

“This must be said 6 times for 9 consecutive days, leaving a copy in the church each day. On or before the 9th day, your prayer will be answerd. It has never been known to fail to grant the favor asked for by the 9th day.”

It sounds to me as though it fosters superstition or manipulation or OCD.

Do many here participate in these Novenas?

You are correct, it is superstition. Never, ever distribute these, and try to discourage others from doing so. There is no real power in these aside from the actual prayer itself.

And if you find things like these in the Church, which have some short, often corny prayer, and then instructions on how to “distribute”, remove them.

The problem is though, there are those who honestly and sincerely believe that these novenas will “work” if prayed according to the instructions. Who knows? Maybe, just maybe, God will grant their request.

I would never tell someone they should not pray; even if I don’t take the “never been known to fail” seriously.

I pray novenas frequently, knowing that the “neverfailness” of God’s reaction to prayer is that he always answers prayer in the way that is best for us, that will lead us closer to him, and to grow in holiness.

That does not mean that we will receive “what we want”. It does mean that we will receive “what we need”.

I don’t do the strange “musts” that are often attached to a novena. To me, (and I don’t know if I’m pushing the envelope here) it is almost a demonic attachment, putting God to the test.

I will often pray a novena and miss days, or pray more or less than the nine days. It’s the prayer, prayed Fervently, (not necessarily perfectly) that is the point, I think. Over attachment to rule and legalism sounds a little Pharissitic (is that a word?) to me.

I concur with Lost Sheep and Marlap.
Prayer, no matter what, is always answered.
The wording that people object to is somewhat misleading, I agree. No one should superstitiously pray, correct.
However, the prayers in those pamphlets do give people comfort and hope.
People have their favorites. 😉
Most of the older women in my parish have their “go-to” Novenas. The ill will that it would bring by removing their favorite prayer cards would not accomplish much, and would cause many undue distress.
I had a person ask me once for a great Novena. I had to explain to her that God answers all prayers. But sometimes, the answer is ‘no’. For our own good.
I think most people understand that the will of God is the important thing. And anyway…nothing is impossible for God. 👍

The problem with using these prayers which have promises attached to them on condition of certain “requirements” is that the faithful often attribute the success of the prayer, should it succeed, to the superstitious requirements which they carried out.

If a little boy uses a St. Joseph prayer, requiring that a certain phrase must be said at the same time of day for 9 days, in order to pray that his daddy gets home safe from war, and his prayer is answered, he may attribute the success of the prayer to the power of the prayer and the requirements which he fulfilled, instead of being thankful for the grace of God and the intercession of St. Joseph.

These things are far more dangerous than you think, and superstition is a far greater evil than many people realize.

I agree. Things “to do” in order to make the prayer effective is superstitious, and can lead to other superstitions.

I remember seeing these in Church when I was in grade school 50+ years ago. We were told by the priest then to remove them. Pure superstition is what we were told. So are those in the paper and I am embarrassed each time I see them.

I wonder who created them and had the audacity to invent the instructions and add “never known to fail”. It certainly plays on the vulnerability and desperateness of others.

I gather them.

Prefer 8 1/2 x 11, unfolded and blank on one side. Our RE classes are always in need of scrap paper. 😃

It isn’t about the prayer; sometimes they are perfectly good prayers. It’s about the part where you say them under certain conditions and they will “succeed.” If someone wants to say the prayer that’s fine; but I won’t even pass along an Internet meme that says to repost, or an email that says to forward. Much less a “formula” prayer that is “guaranteed.” Sure it is “guaranteed” that God hears the prayer, but I think it is clearly implied, if not explicitly stated, that “correct” prayer execution will bring about the desired action from God.

But saying “God hears my prayers” and “my prayers never fail,” are two different things. The latter puts us in a position of rating whether God fails – because if we are sure we followed the formula than surely we haven’t.

My pastor and our last two pastors have always asked anybody who sees these sitting around in church pews or adoration chapel, to remove them and destroy them.

Sounds kind of like a “Stairway to Heaven” or maybe a “Tower of Babel.”

It is an invention intended to use human planning and intellect to reach God.

I have been through some very difficult times the past several years, losing three of the most important men in my life, including my father and husband. I pray several prayers that are considered never fail, not because they are never fail, but the prayers or novenas themselves. I found that when it was most difficult to pray or find the words that if I committed to praying for 9 days straight, I was able to pray through the difficult time. I have found that God answers our prayers and hears our pleas, sometimes the answer is just no. He does hear the desires of our hearts, and will give us what we need not necessarily what we want. We have to believe the plans he has laid out for us, and trust. These prayers have been carrying me. I am thankful to Father God, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, St Jude, St Anthony and St These of Little Flower for every blessing. I hope that these prayers help you as well.
May the sacred heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved. throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us.Say for 9 days
Most holy apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of.
Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of.
Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (… State your intention … ) I will praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Say 3 xs - Our Father:Say 3 xs Hail Mary:Say 3 xs Gloria:
O Lord Jesus Christ, to Your Most Sacred Heart I humbly confide this intention (… ).
Only look on me then do what Your Heart inspires. Let Your Sacred Heart decide.
I count on Your Sacred Heart. Jesus, I trust in You. I throw myself on the Mercy of Your Most Sacred Heart. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, You will not fail me. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Your Love for me.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Your Kingdom come. O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I have asked for many favors, but I earnestly implore this one. Take it; place it in Your Sacred Heart. When the Eternal Father sees it covered with Your Most Precious Blood, He will not refuse it. It will no longer be my prayer, but yours, O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You. Let me never be confounded. Amen

I say these prayers everyday, I am thankful for the blessings I have. Maybe that is the true purpose of these novenas. To take the time out of our day to pray and to say thank you. Many times people pray when they are in need but not otherwise. I am thankful to Father God, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, St Jude, St Anthony and St These of Little Flower for every blessing. I hope that these prayers help you as well.
DEAR HEART OF JESUS In the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this special one. Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it with your own broken heart where your Father will see it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen.
Holy Spirit you who make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideals. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget all that is done to me. You who are in all the instincts of my life. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you (name whatever your request is). Say this prayer for 3 days.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was ever left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
O Jesus who has said “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you” through the intercession of Mary, thy most Holy Mother, I knock, I seek, I ask that my prayer will be granted (make request). O Jesus who said "All you ask of the Father in My name, He will grant you through the intercession of Mary, Thy most Holy Mother. I humbly and urgently ask thy Father in Thy name that my prayer be granted (make request). O Jesus, Who has said “Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass”. Through the intercession of Mary, Thy most Holy Mother, I feel confident that my prayer will be granted (make request).
PRAYER TO BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) O most Beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein You are my Mother. O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succour me in the necessity (make request) There are none that can withstand Your power. O show me herein You are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (three times). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (three times.)
O HOLY ST. JUDE, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, the faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in the time of need. To You I have recourse from the depths of my heart and humbly beg you to who, God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return I propose to make your name known and cause your name to be invoked. 3 Our Father’s, 3 Hail Mary’s, 3 Gloria’s. St. Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid.
MAY the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved, and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us {OR} pray for us. {Saint Jude, Worker of miracles, pray for us.} Saint Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us.
5 DAY NOVENA TO ST TERESA of the Little Flower. Please pick me a rose from the Heavenly garden and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant the message I implore and tell Him I love Him more and more. Prayer to be followed by 5 Our Father’s, 5 Hail Mary’s, 5 Gloria’s.
PRAYER TO SAINT ANTHONY
O Holy Saint Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I impmplore you to obtain for me… (Here mention your request.) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle; even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving Saint Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen.

One of the favorites when I was growing up was the St. Joseph novena. Never been known to fail.

(Note: This prayer was found in the 50th year of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Sometime during the 16th century, it was sent by the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. It is said that whoever shall read this prayer or take it with them, shall never die a sudden death or be drowned, nor shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy, or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle.)

and I’ve prayed it a lot over the years. I don’t think I’ve ever prayed it frivolously. I didn’t always get what I wanted. However - there are times in my life I can think back and it’s almost miraculous I am still here today. So maybe the prayers were answered in a different way.

Say what you will about these novenas, but I relied on them very heavily to get through graduate school. Whether it was a big exam or a tough assignment I prayed them almost constantly. Somehow I always managed to pass or make my deadlines.

Was it the novenas that made the difference? I don’t know and I don’t care. All I know is I prayed and I succeeded. That is enough for me.

I like your distinction that you cannot parse out the effects of the novenas. Because as soon as you say “it was because of the prayer” then it gets awkward because it becomes an unprovable opinion one way or t’other.

You may believe in their effects or not, but at least we know they didn’t prevent you from success. 😉
