I wanted to share with you a “new” Act of Contrition I recently obtained from a priest … I really like it.

At the close of my recent confession I was asked to say my Act of Contrition and I started off with the “.O my God, I’m heartily sorry for having offended thee…” and the priest gently said “No, I want you to say the one taped to the kneeler on the left” … so I read it out loud and it REALLY touched my heart.

Upon finishing I said, “Father, I REALLY like this prayer … does it have a name (ie like the Nicene Creed) or can I Google it…or where can I get a copy of it?” and he said “Here, I can give you a copy” as he slipped the paper through the screen.

So I formatted it as a PDF file and by accessing the dropbox link you can get it. My printer takes cardstock so I print 4 on one side and flip it over (depending on how your printer feeds) and then printed the other side and it is all lined up to match – giving you English on one side and Spanish on the other – just cut it apart.

I printed copies out for my Apologetics class and many came back asking for more copies; I printed extra copies and put them in the literature rack at church in both English and Spanish and they are disappearing at a rapid rate and I keep printing more; I gave some to my mother and she’s passing them around the old folks home and she gave them all away needs more! (I think she’s got them on a waiting list …hee hee)

There’s something about this prayer that just touches your heart. So you are all welcome to it — pass it on!

ACT OF CONTRITION
Forgive me my sins, O Lord, forgive me my
sins: the sins of my youth, the sins of my
age, the sins of my soul, the sins of my body,
my idle sins, my serious voluntary sins, the
sins I know, the sins I don’t know; the sins I
have concealed so long, which are now
hidden from my memory.

I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal, and
venial, for all the sins of my childhood up
to the present hour.

I know my sins have wounded Thy tender
Heart, O my Savior, let me be freed from the
bonds of evil through the most bitter passion
of my Redeemer.

O my Jesus, forget and forgive what I have
been. Amen

Perhaps the question can be asked in a different way: what does it mean to remember? How does remembering affect our response to another?

…? I dont understand your intention in rephrasing my question

I’ve been given this act of contrition as a penance on a couple occasions. I agree it’s beautiful.

that’s true… not forget in a sense of an imperfect memory, but rather to no longer hold them against us…?

Yep… that’s how I see it …nothing imperfect in the Lord (memory or otherwise!) but unequaled in His grace and love for us. Thanks for the question.

Jaaye,

I just tried to download the prayer from Dropbox but nothing happened. Could you relink it?

Hmmmm I just tried it and it opened right up. Here’s the actual link URL … perhaps pasting it in a different browser may work for you?

EDIT:
OH dang… when I insert the link the graphic shows up for Dropbox instead of just printing out the text of the link.

By mousing on top of the dropbox graphic and right clicking and then choosing open link or open link in new tab …again…it opened right up.
