Ever notice how if you quote from it, there always seems to be someone who immediately attacks it as unreliable.

Really? Wow. I’ve never had that experience.

(but I’m fairly new again to Catholic Answers Forum. I had an old screen name and never really used it)

I’ve been around for a while, but I’ve never noticed this.

However, I have OFTEN seen it cited as an “authoritative” source. It is not any more authoritative than any other secular book about the Church. It’s a useful resource, but it should never be thought of as “official” or anything like that, especially when presenting opinion (and there’s a lot of opinion in there).

And, of course, it’s 100 years old, lacking the more recent insights of the Ordinary Magesterium, several Popes, and an Ecumenical Council.

I haven’t noticed that either.

Actually, I think it’s a pretty good source and it seems to be balanced presenting the good, the bad, and the ugly.

You need to remember that it presents the Catholic Faith as it was in 191X ? Those things that cannot change are accurate, those things that can may not be, and those things that have changed are no longer accurate.

Yes, and those who typically attack the Catholic Encyclopedia’s accuracy tend to cite Wikipedia as a reliable source.
