Just curious, you mentioned yoga in your original post. Do you consider yoga a new-age spiritual movement prohibited by the Church?
I think the safest way to learn about prayer is to go with the Doctors of the Church such as St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, etc. It doesn’t seem wise to look to other traditions to get closer to God when we have the treasures of the Church available to us. Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut.For the yoga question.
I don’t think the Catholic Church is in favor of Catholics participating in other religions.
I know yoga has its roots in Hinduism. I don’t know if the Catholic Church has condemned yoga specifically. If I am wrong on any of this someone please correct me.
In my original post I know I listed “Christian yoga” as a class the retreat center offers. I guess I would have to see how they make the yoga Christian. Although I remain skeptical.
I have heard arguments that the problem with yoga is with its spiritual aspects, but one can do the movements and not have it conflict with being Catholic/Christian, but I am not so sure.
Here is an article on yoga:

I don’t know if it is a sin not to try to correct this because I think that you have it at Cardinal Mahony’s big seminars and religious gatherings in Los Angeles. I thought that Cardinal Mahony was appointed by the Pope, so it probably is OK what he is recommending to us.I recently started volunteering at what I thought was a Catholic retreat center run by this specific order of nuns. Only to find out after volunteering that they sell books and provide seminars, on the enneagram, centering prayer, tarot cards, “Christian yoga”, just to name a few.
I have only continued to volunteer to inform other volunteers of the error of the new age. I have encountered much resistance. I plan on leaving my volunteer position.
I find it very misleading to Catholics and other Christians because it gives the appearance that to participate in the new age is compatible with following Jesus and even more so because the nuns participate in the new age.
Should I continue trying to talk to others at the retreat center?
Should I write a letter to the bishop?
Or should I just leave my volunteering and leave it at that?
Isn’t it a sin to not try and correct this?
Catholics today have to inform and educate themselves as to what is coming forth from their parishes, and even their bishops and cardinals.I don’t know if it is a sin not to try to correct this because I think that you have it at Cardinal Mahony’s big seminars and religious gatherings in Los Angeles. I thought that Cardinal Mahony was appointed by the Pope, so it probably is OK what he is recommending to us.
I thought the Pope appointed a friend of Cardinal Mahony to a very high place next to him in the Vatican, was it Cardinal Levada of San Francisco? Why do you claim that the Pope doesn’t approve, when he appoints Cardinal Levada to a high place? If Cardinal Mahony’s seminars, etc., contain questionable content
that doesn’t mean it has Pope Benedict’s approval. And, if that is totally true about the Cardinal, he may need some educating.
I don’t know anything about Cardinal Levada, my point was that Pope Benedict is not condoning questionable material, and we are not to conclude that he is, because he appointed or associated with someone in the Church who is allowing this questionable material.I thought the Pope appointed a friend of Cardinal Mahony to a very high place next to him in the Vatican, was it Cardinal Levada of San Francisco? So are we to conclude that His Holiness is condemning the behaviour by allowing His Eminence to continue sheparding the flock of Los Angeles?I don’t know anything about Cardinal Levada, my point was that Pope Benedict is not condoning questionable material, and we are not to conclude that he is, because he appointed or associated with someone in the Church who is allowing this questionable material.
I sincerely do not know why these things are allowed to continue. I believe that our Pope Benedict has a deep desire for all members of the Church to obey the Church in faith and morals. So are we to conclude that His Holiness is condemning the behaviour by allowing His Eminence to continue sheparding the flock of Los Angeles?
This has been done and then some with specific regard to Cardinal Mahoney. Every year at the Catholic Congress there is no shortage of “Catholics” protesting and demonstrating outside the conference.I sincerely do not know why these things are allowed to continue. I believe that our Pope Benedict has a deep desire for all members of the Church to obey the Church in faith and morals.
Could it be that we need members from the pew to write, en masse, to our pope about these things that take place?
Could it be that our Pope and the one before him are both very intelligent and well informed men (along with the many others like in manner found in Rome) and are well aware of what is happening in Los Angeles yet choose to keep the dialogue open? This leads me to wonder if the fact of the matter is that you find objectionable something that the Church does not?Could it be that our pope is not aware of the large amount of questionable material that is promoted by these bishops/cardinals?
I don’t know the answer to these questions, and I sincerely believe that Pope Benedict desires what is best for the Church.

Ooops, sorry I sent that before typing my response. This has been done and then some with specific regard to Cardinal Mahoney. Every year at the Catholic Congress there is no shortage of “Catholics” protesting and demonstrating outside the conference.

Frankly, I do not know! My posts, earlier in this thread, was in reaction in particular what you said about the retreat center you went to…that they were selling tarot cards! What exactly is Cardinal Mahoney promoting at these events?

Nothing specific other than the Conference itself. His Eminence tends to show up to open the conference and then I don’t see him again - not sure where he goes. What exactly is Cardinal Mahoney promoting at these events?

OK, so here is where I should have asked the question as to what specifically is it at Cardinal Mahoney’s “big seminars and religious gatherings” are promoting which may be construed as blatantly wrong?I don’t know if it is a sin not to try to correct this because I think that you have it at Cardinal Mahony’s big seminars and religious gatherings in Los Angeles.
