New Age-ism and Earth day and Going Green?

I was listening a bit (while I could before I had to go) on my car radio to a woman who was formerly heavily into the new age movement. I wasn’t able to listen to the whole show but a couple questions popped into my head that I am hoping maybe some can answer for me here.

One is in regards to “Earth Day”. Is Earth day just an innocent day commemorating ecology or does it have ties to this new agism?

Also the same question popped into my head regarding the whole “Going Green” movement. Is this linked to new agism?

There are, no doubt, some aspects of the overall Green movement that could be associated with New Age thought. I would be hesitant to say the whole Green movement is associated with New Age thought. The movement is too big to categorized all as all New Age.

I can’t speak to the origins of Earth Day. That would be interesting to research.
 
Earth Day is what you make of it. Are there New-Agers who have a heavy presence at events or who have a special interest in ecology? Sure. But then again, a fair number of our country’s founding fathers were Freemasons. Should we not celebrate Independence Day because of its Masonic ties? Earth Day is just one of those non-obligatory little theme days made in heaven for corporate sponsors, politicians and activists. Do what you will with it, or not. Pick up some trash on your favorite beach or ride your bike instead of drive or go whole-hog and pledge yourself to a carbon-free existence, or take a spin in an 8mpg SUV while throwing your styrofoam coffee cups out the window. It’s up to you.
 
Sometimes I think it is overdone… It does in some aspects carry the traits of a religious philosophy.
As with many things it can also be a harmless thing however. It’s what we make out of it that’s the problem.
