I hear there is a new and improved translation of the mass. Can anyone give me an example or two of what is changed? Will every church be adopting this?
There are quite a few examples at usccb.org/romanmissal/. I think I’ve also seen a PDF somewhere that was the complete new translation. I’m not sure where to find it again, but someone else might know.I hear there is a new and improved translation of the mass. Can anyone give me an example or two of what is changed?
Every parish that celebrates the Novus Ordo will have to.Will every church be adopting this?
New Translation:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might.
IMHO This day was long in coming.Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
The complete Order of the Mass is hiding right on the site you provided, under Resources:I think I’ve also seen a PDF somewhere that was the complete new translation. I’m not sure where to find it again, but someone else might know.
Yes, but when is this day? I keep hearing 2010, which has arrived. Is there an actual date for implementation?IMHO This day was long in coming.![]()
Well, yes and no. It was mistakenly introduced in a few places in South Africa, and it didn’t go well because there was absolutely no catechesis for it whatsoever. People simply walked into church one day and the entire Mass was different with no explanation. That would shock anyone. In any case, similar things happened (actually, much worse) when the Mass went through the changes after Vatican II, so there are bound to be issues at first.Actually it’s already been introduced into South Africa and it wasn’t accepted well at all.
You’re right but people have been used to making more responses since the first changes. At the OF’s I attend you still have very spirited "And also with you"s throughout. That’ll be tough to change language that’s become second nature to you. No doubt some will be freaked out.Well, yes and no. The complete translation has finally been accepted by all English speaking Conferences and submitted to Rome. It was done in many parts and while some parts have already been approved by Rome (i.e. the Ordinary of the Mass), others are still awaiting that approval. Once all the books are approved, the entire translation will be reviewed to make sure that prayers/sections that were part of two or three different ‘books’ are identically translated.Yes, but when is this day? I think with the proper catechesis and a positive attitude on the part of priests and bishops this translation can be implemented smoothly.Actually it’s already been introduced into South Africa and it wasn’t accepted well at all.
Well, let’s not blame the priests now. Many of them are older and pretty much set in their ways. Forty years ago, it took a long time for some of them to begin saying Mass in English and many left the priesthood (I know a few ex-priests) because they couldn’t adapt to the changes or got to love the secular life more. Not that I expect too many to leave this time around, nevertheless I wouldn’t be surprised by the resistance of the priests and their congregation regulars to the change. And, don’t kid yourself, the changes are significant, especially to the elderly. And they are the ones (not the only ones, though) who go to Mass every day. Many of them will always prefer the status quo just because it is the status quo. So who are we, who attend once a week at the most, to tell them to get with it? Hardly pastoral.OTOH, if priests make negative comments, as we are seeing in the US with the ‘wait’ movement, the people in the pews who have not been following this and looking forward to it for years (the majority, I suspect) will take their cue from them and react negatively to the entire process.
