Can anyone explain how the reading of Sunday Mass are chosen. As in: when, by whom, are they national, are they world wide, etc. Thank you in a advance.
The selections are worldwide (with some local variations) and they were made by Rome. Note that there is a “common lectionary project” that has led to the Catholics, Lutherans and Anglicans using, in general, the same readings.
The Lectionary is a universal standard in the Church (although there are some local differences, based on conference and diocesan calendars – some local saints, for example). The Sunday Lectionary has a three-year cycle, and the weekday Lectionary has a two-year cycle. This revised Lectionary was put together sometime around 1969, probably by the same group (or a similar group) that was responsible for the revision of the liturgy.
