Well, here’s a new one I came across on a fundamentalist website:

**"Acts 1:15-26. It has been accepted that Matthias was chosen to replace Judas in ministry . I would prefer to see that Matthias was NOT chosen to be an apostle, but to fill the ministry of treasurer. A return to the Greek in this passage and the above Scripture, as well as a working knowledge of the doctrine of the body of Christ, reveals that there is a strong possibility that Matthias was chosen to be a Treasurer to replace Judas, and not an apostle."

Has anyone else encountered this argument—that Matthias was chosen merely as a treasurer, and not as another apostle—and are there any links you can recommend?

God bless,

Don

In my translation of Acts 1:20ff…

It was determined that someone had to fill a vacant spot. And the requirement for that “someone” was

“one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us… one of thes men must become with us a witness to his resurrection. And they put forward two…”

Where is there any doubt…?? except in the mind of the fundamentalist. Anything to avoid Apostolic Sujccession as a pre-requisite of the True Church. That is also why I prefer to think of the Catholic Church as the Church… and all other bodies without succession as simply faith communities.

.

Wow, the never-ending spectacle of private revelation!

*And they prayed and said, “Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show which one of these two thou hast chosen
to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside, to go to his own place.” *

The word “apostleship” is right there in the Greek: apostolhV (can’t display in Greek font – anybody know how to do that?)

Hmm: I would like to know what he would have been a treasurer of? I am sure the apostles were just rolling in the dinares.!

I would prefer to see that . . .

this is the key to this example. We do not have license to interpret scripture according to our personal preference, prejudice, preconceptions, and limited understanding of language, either of the translation or of the original language.

This is a howler.:rotfl:

One of the advantages of Sola Scriptura is that fundamentalists can distance themselves from their brothers.

Eisegesis: reading a meaning into a text, rather than letting a text speak for itself, is an error anyone can make.

We have license to be faithful to the word of God, and by His grace the freedom to find it. Unfortunately also the freedom to be fools.

Perhaps he is making a connection between Matthew the tax-collector and Matthew the apostle: both good with money, therefore… But conjecture and speculation as a basis for theology doesn’t sit well with me.

Who was the twelfth apostles in Act 6:2 if it was not Matthias? 🙂

Some fundamentalists are saying anything.

Well, if that was the case, where did the 24th elder of the book of revelation come from? The elders are understood to be leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles, right? So how would the fundamentalists answer this? That **Judas **is the 24th elder?

Maybe the apostles chose Matthias to be the treasurer, and Christ chose Paul to be the 12 apostle.

VociMike, 🙂

apostolhV : αποστολης ?
αποστολος !

I just use the apple OS-X system preferences – choose international, (name removed by moderator)ut menu, and then choose Greek from preferences.
Then, all I have to do is push apple-space, and my keyboard goes greek. Apple-space, and it is back to english. Pretty neat, huh?

What are the odds you use a PC? 😉

Best wishes.
