New Baronius Missal is Excellent!

My 1962 Baronius Press Missal arrived today and it was even better than I anticipated. Along with the propers for the seasons and the other usual things that every Missal has, the Baronius Missal also has a huge section devoted to prayers including the way of the cross and the rosary (including the mysteries of light).

There is also a section entitled "An Abridgement of Christian Doctrine which has the 10 Commandments, the six precepts of the Church, the seven sacraments, the three theological virtues etc

The Missal also has an explanation of the Penitential Rule of the Church. This reaffirms the requirement a of Friday penance, and details the rules governing meatless Friday’s.

In the foreword the reader is informed that while this is a reprint of the original 1962 Missal, it has also been updated to suit the Church today. For example, the luminous mysteries were added to the section concerning the Rosary.

I highly recommend this Missal. It is a treasury of Catholic spirituality and is of a very high quality. Definitely worth the money!

Does it have an excerpt of “Your Mass and Your Life” in the beginning? The Angelus Press does, but I don’t know if that’s part of the original 1962 Missal or something they added on their own.
 
Good to hear.

My mom just ordered it for herself, and I may order it myself once I see hers.

Oh, I’m so happy! I’m still waiting for my copy (I’m in Canada, so it might take a bit), but I’m even more excited now that I’ve read your comments.

I received my new Baronius Missal yesterday. It is way better than I anticipated.

The only downer is the font type is smaller than I had hoped for. The Latin next to the English is very hard to read, but then, most people will be reading the English, right?

I am happy with my purchase of the Baronius Missal. I do not wish to support the SSPX by purchasing the “other” 1962 misssal. My opinion only.

“I am a loyal son of the Church,” to borrow the famous phrase of St. Teresa of Jesus, OCD.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don’t like to shop at any grocery stores that have Protestant, Muslim, Jewish or Orthodox employees trying to make a living to feed their kids. :rolleyes:

This is not the same thing although I do understand the point you are making.

I did not buy the Angelus Missal for the same reason; I did not want to financially help the SSPX.

I do not want to support the SSPX because they are in schism and I wouldn’t want my money to go towards another SSPX chapel or something like that. The more money that this organisation gets, the more people it can lead astray.

I will purchase products from them when they are reconciled with Rome, if and when that ever happens.
 
I have the Baronius Missal and really enjoy using it - I have begun to do the evening prayers regularly and hope to do more of the morning prayers also.

I’ve used that in combination with a pamphlet from Eclessia Dei (forgive my spelling), when I’ve gone to the Tridentine mass at our cathedral. I’m pretty new at it so I’m just starting to get used to following along.

Do you really believe the situations are equivalent?
 
I am somewhat peeved as Baronius inform me that my missal is in transit and yet DHL have failed to appear with it. It’s supposed to be getting delivered to work and they haven’t showed up.

A little annoying, as I’m SO keen to see this new missal - the only missal I have is my grandmothers from the 1930s and I only keep that for sentimental reasons - it’s disintegrating!!

Who’s the patron saint of delivery companies?!

A VERY good point, and I do see what you mean. I should really explain myself better (or just keep my yap shut) if I’m going to make statements like that …

I’m not yet Catholic. Outside of CAF, I have one Catholic friend. I have a great deal to learn, and while I’m doing so, I think it’s wisest to tread a pretty conservative path, and not delve into anything perceived as being even a wee bit controversial - I just don’t know enough yet. SSPX and the other groups may have excellent points, but I don’t have a good solid foundation yet to make a comparison from. So for now, at least, I think it’s best that I not - for example - grab an SSPX missal and make that my basis for assuming ‘THIS is Catholicism’.

By the same point, though, I don’t know enough to be shooting my mouth off and giving ‘ME TOO!’ comments like the one I did, so please accept my apologies (and thank you for pointing out my foolishness as gently as you did).

Well, that’s just silly - you’re in Scotland, for heaven’s sake, so it’s not like they have far to ship it! I hope it arrives soon.

The closest saint I can find for you is Anthony of Padua - the patron saint of mail. 😃 Swineherds, too … he seems like quite a handy sort of saint.

Deb, the New Marian Missal for Daily Mass, published by Angelus Press IS fully Catholic. It’s a very good one, and I own a copy, because my brother gave it to me as a gift. It has side by side Latin and English translations, which make it very easy to follow, but I’m sure the Baronius Press Missal is just as good.

You know, it might be good for me to hunt that down so I can compare the two - thank you! I guess it’s rather like one’s choice of Bible translations - we can argue forever about what’s ‘best’, but it really comes down to the blend of understandability and … reverence that hits each person just so.

Hmm, possibly off-topic a bit, but I’ll try floating it anyway … does anyone know if the Daily Roman Missal published by Scepter and edited by Reverend James Socias is associated with any particular group? It’s the missal I have now, and was (back when I bought it) the only daily missal I was able to find, and I’m just curious.
 
I should have referred to it as a booklet - it has the liturgy of the mass in it - latin on the left and english on the right. Very easy to follow. I got it at a local book store, but I think you can get it on their website.

Vincent, did yours arrive yet? Mine just showed up today - shipped, interestingly enough, from the US (for some reason, I wasn’t expecting that). I haven’t had the chance yet to truly explore it properly, but it’s a nice, compact little thing, and looks just lovely from what I’ve seen so far!
