New Ben-Hur adaptation

Looks… okay? Of course it won’t best the Heston classic but I’m not one to crucify a film for being a remake when the Heston one was a remake itself.

But the first trailer seriously took the wrong tone and made it seem like a generic revenge drama, while the second trailer is more appropriately Biblical but that music choice whaaat.
 
After seeing the first trailer, a couple of months ago, my reaction was: “There is not a single shot in this trailer that makes me want to pay to see this in a theater, instead of watching my bought-and-paid for copy of the Heston version at home.”

But after seeing the second trailer the other day, I’m willing to give the new version a chance, if for no other reason than it looks like they’re doing a different take on Our Lord’s involvement in the story. That could be interesting.
 
Oddly, the thing that stands out to me is that the actors are too clean!

Except for Gone With The Wind, all the familiar versions of the films you mentioned were themselves remakes of silent films from the 1920’s. (The silent version of The Wizard of Oz is currently available to Amazon Prime subscribers.)

I didn’t realize there was a silent version of Wizard of Oz. I have seen the earlier version of Ben Hur. It was good.
 
I’ve seen the 1926 version of Ben-Hur; it was actually pretty good. Dunno where one can find it now, but it’s worth watching and I don’t say that about many of the silent era movies. On the other hand, the 1959 version was really, really good, so good that if I had my own list of the 10 best movies ever, this one would definitely be on it. So I’m sure I’ll be disappointed by the new version.

It was included in the 4-disc DVD set of the Heston version that Warner Bros. released a few years back (and I own a copy). Not sure if it was included on the later Blu-ray edition or not.

Doesn’t even sound like the Heston Ben Hur. Won’t waste my money, and wonder if it will be a box office flop.
 
I really like the Heston version - it’s hard to imagine another Ben Hur movie at all.
 
Charlton Heston’s Ben Hur will always be THE Ben Hur, but I would be curious to see it on DVD. It’s like trying pizza in other states. It will never be NY pizza, but once I accept that, I can try others. 😉
 
It bombed. I used to manage a movie theatre and if a movie comes out this late in the Summer season, then it most likely is a big budget, projected flop. Hollywood saves all the good stuff for: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The farther away from those dates, the less confidence the studios have in the film making any money and the less worthy it is for us to spend our $$. 🍿
