Bishop Silva is a man of great courage and faith. He is as composed a man as I have ever seen under very difficult circumstances. When he first became the pastor of our newly-formed parish (he was appointed by then Bishop of Oakland to help meld two parishes into one), he welcomed the travelling image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was visiting our diocese at that time. It was a lot of work for him, but he accepted it with gratitude, and he consecrated our parish at that time to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He also was instrumental in bringing the Gabriel Project into our parish, which is a ministry to pregnant moms facing difficult circumstances. During respect life month one year, as our parish was short on funds, he paid for the respect life fliers out of his own pocket.
During the crisis of faith brought about through the revelations of priests abusing children, his steadiness and words of wisdom were a great comfort. He prayed the Mass in time of war on Sept. 11, 2001, and his steady faith was a consolation to us all.
One of the things I will miss the most is his wonderful speaking and singing voice.
You are truly blessed to have been given Bishop Silva, who was born in Hawaii, has family there, and loves the people of Hawaii as his own family. God bless you!
