Rumor around here has it that Archbishop Cyril is being moved to Beruit. Any ideas on who might be the new bishop here in the US?šŸ™‚

Haven’t heard anything like this, but maybe we’ll know more by the end of the week since he’ll be in town for the Convention.

BTW, why aren’t you here? šŸ˜›

Peace and God bless!

Who would be moving him, the synod? If he is receiving an appointment in Lebanon I suspect that the synod has decided that.

Who would name his replacement in the USA?

If there is any truth to this, I myself would love to see Bishop Nicholas Samra take over the Eparchy. However, I would be loath to see Archbishop Cyril go.

Any particular reason to drag him out of ā€œretirementā€ or whatever it’s called?
He’s been highly influential in my decision to become Melkite. 😃 I also know that he has a deep love for the authentic Eastern/Melkite traditions, has done a great deal to promote the Melkites in this country, and has been very vocal about pulling the Melkites out of the ā€œghetto mentality.ā€ Those are just a few things off the top of my head. šŸ‘

Philip - I was curious after reading your signature, what is the Zoghby Initiative?

I’ll send you an e-mail about it some time later this afternoon. It’s somewhat of a controversial initiative, but it’s the only reasonable solution to the 1054 Schism that’s been suggested.

Isn’t he the American bishop who voted against the Zoghby Initiative? Or was that someone else?

It is now official. The Holy Synod of the Melkite-Greek Catholic Church of Antioch has elected Archbishop Cyril Bustros, Eparch of Newton, to the Metropolia of Beirut. Eis polli eti Despota!!

Looks like we are getting a new bishop!

Hello Hesychios! It’s always nice to hear from you.
No, Bishop Samra was/is very much for the Zoghby Initiative. In fact, he is responsible for having translated Kyr Zoghby’s ā€œEcumenical Reflectionsā€ into English. šŸ‘

He is worthy!

Sayedna Cyril just arrived at the Convention today and I got to speak with him. I congratulated him on his ā€œpromotionā€ and he was shocked that I knew. He said, ā€œwhat? It is a secret!ā€ I told him there are no secrets in the age of the internet. šŸ˜›

So far I haven’t heard anything about who will be our new Bishop, but I will keep my ears open.

As a side note, Myrna Nazzour gave a wonderful presentation today. Such a humble woman!

Peace and God bless!

Aaahh… I wish I could go to the convention, listened to the speakers, and met you guys there… It’s too far from Columbus. I hope I could have a chance to go next time… =)

I’m aware of a Melkite parish in Columbus, Holy Resurrection parish. I have yet to visit that parish, but I have heard of the many great things the Melkites have done to keep their traditions intact and pure (such as the Zoghby initiative as I see was mentioned earlier) and from what I have read here, Archbishop Cyril will be great in his new position. I hope to experience the Melkite tradition for myself one of these days; the traditions, spirituality and theologies of the East interest me greatly.

I know I have a feeble grasp of Byzantium and Eastern Christianity in general, but infants learn by following along and mimicking those with more experience than them :o

I agree that the Melkites try to keep the Byzantine tradition pure. My parish in Columbus is one of them and the priest is Byzantine minded. However, I’ve seen some other Melkite parishes that have a little bit of Latin influence. For example, there’s one that doesn’t have iconostasis (the church building was used by Protestants before the Melkites) and uses an organ during the liturgy. There’s another one that looks very Byzantine and has great choir, but an organ is used for some songs during the liturgy…

I’m grateful that the one here looks pure to me ^^

Btw, is the decision to appoint the Bishop for US Melkite done by the Synod, or the Pope is involved in the process?

My understanding is . . . .

For appointments outside the Patriarchal territories, i.e. outside the old Ottoman Empire, the Synod sends to Rome the ā€œterna,ā€ a list of 3 names, i.e. first, second, third choices. Rome does a secret consultation and then appoints the candidate of their choice. It is often the first choice, but does not have to be any of the three. For appointments within the Patr. territories, the Synod sends one name and awaits Rome’s nihil obstat. If Rome objects the Synod chooses another name.

But for all that the Melkites insist that they believe what the Orthodox Church teaches, this ecclesiastical model of subordination is completely foreign to us.
