SLAVA ISUSU CHRISTU!

The Holy Father, Pope Francis has named the Very Reverend Father Kurt Burnette, Rector of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh as 5th Bishop of the Eparchy of Passaic.

Bishop-elect Kurt will be enthroned in Passaic on Wedensday, December 4, 2013.

Mnohaja i blahaja lita!

I miss Bishop-elect Kurt terribly as our pastor. Our current pastor is great, no doubts, but when Metropolitan Skurla assigned Father Kurt as the rector of Ss. Cyril and Methodius we were all incredibly disappointed to see him go. He was the presider at the first Catholic Divine Liturgy I attended. I still remember his first homily I heard. I was feeling sick this last Sunday morning so I attended the Roman Rite - and the Gospel reading was the publican and the pharisee. I mentioned something that he had preached to my girlfriend. His homilies were always excellent, and I always got something from them. It was with him that I learned to serve the Byzantine Rite.

He was an able administrator at our parish. He started a college ministry (which I was President of for a time) which is still going and has expanded to two other parishes in our Eparchy.

So, Eparchy of Passaic, we here are very jealous of you. You’re getting a great bishop.

Many Years to Bishop-elect Kurt!

Finally a non ethnic bishop in one of the Eastern Catholic Churches! 🙂 And a convert to Catholicism at that! WOW!

Axios Axios Axios!!!

Scottish is an ethnicity. 😛

Do you mean convert to the Ruthenian church? I am reasonably certain that Father Kurt is a cradle Roman Catholic.

I hope that in 3-4 years the Church will consider Fr. Kurt as the new potential metro in Pittsburgh. Without wishing to attack anyone, the Ruthenian Church desperately needs a leader with a higher level of horsepower in that position. Given his education and experience, that might just be Fr. Kurt depending on how he does in Passiac.

Metropolitan Skurla is younger than Bishop-elect Kurt, so I don’t anticipate that happening.

Anything is possible with God. The Ruthenian Church had better look very carefully at the caliber of bishop it so desperately needs in that most critical position.

In my limited experience as a Catholic, bishops are not usually replaced prematurely unless there is a severe deficit in behavior or they have severe health problems. I wish neither upon our God-loving Metropolitan.
