And in Brigham Young’s time when missionaries were converting young women, and marrying them right off. The men in high places in SLC complained that nothing was being left for them.

Polygamy makes a meat market of young, single women and girls.
Maybe that’s the real reason Mormon missionaries aren’t allowed to date today – like many other things, it’s left over from the time of polygamy. The same might be said of secret temple marriage ceremonies. At first they were used to hide polygamy.

The younger men and the powerless men always lose out with polygamy. There are not enough women to go around.
I hate to throw a wrench into the party but for some reason it is always assumed that the women of polygamous men were beautiful. This was not true at all. Many were quite homey looking and far from the runway models of today. It was no picnic to be sure for the polygamous men.

That may have been true for the men down on the totem pole. The ones at the top wound up with the pick of the lot. Brigham Young especially had a good time finding the prettiest in the territory.
