I’ve never really read any books on philosphy so I’m in the process of reading Confessions by Saint Augustine (Penguin Books edition), I rented it from the library. I’ve heard that is a great book. How should I go upon reading it, as I have seen on different reviews that it is a autobiography. On another site I saw that it shouldn’t be read as an autobiography.

Thanks
Stephan

Read it for the truth it contains and for inspiration.

It is an autobiography. What Saint Augustine said about his life is famous and what people well remember from reading this book. One of the best-known things in it is what he says about his mother, Saint Monica, who was always praying for him when he was a lost soul. What we know about her came from this book. Also famous is his instant conversion when he picked up the Bible and read a passage in Saint Paul. It is one of the very greatest autobiographies of a Christian of all time.

Thanks for the insight I definitely look forward to getting started on it. I had forgotten that his mother was a saint ad well

I’m going to try and start reading it Tues as I have been very busy with school work. I’m going to read City of God after I finish this.

I meant to comment, as in which book should I read first? City of God or his autobiography?
