Relax folks, it’s like, 18 Vatican months which means in human terms about 180 years. 😃

Just kidding.

I feel for those who recently shelled out for the current 4-volume set. Mine is in French and I also have the Latin version so I’m good for a while! But I rarely use them, I use the same monastic breviary as the community I’m affiliated with. Also in Latin and French.

Oh, because God is outside of time, right? I get it.

So, to buy that unused four volume set on craigslist for $100 or wait…? :hmmm:

18 months isn’t unreasonable. The Revised Grails Psalms are already available, the Proper of the the Saints should be complete with the New version of the Missal.

The Ordinary should be in good shape except for the antiphons
Proper of the Saints should be done
Proper of the Seasons needs to be done
Commons needs to be done
Hymns should be complete
Office of the Readings should be complete

Overall not in bad shape, IMO, of course I’m not the one that does the translations so take this with a grain of salt. :choocho:

It might not take long to complete but there is priority as to which rites or books they are working on at this moment. From what I understand the Rite of Marriage is next (maybe before my daughter gets married in Oct 2012. Then there are the other rites. It is important that the rites get worked on first since these affect more people. The LOTH can wait. Then it has to go through the Episcopal conferences. It took almost 10 years for the Missal to get voted on and approved by all conferences and by Rome.

Fair enough, I have no idea what the order of documents to be revised is, I’ve heard on other threads a similar order as you’ve mentioned. I saw the thread that said new breviary and18 months and I thought that would be cool so I joined in.

Actually the OP said that the new breviary will be available from ICEL in 18 months.

It still needs to be gone over by the bishops conference and approved by them then sent to Rome to be gone over again and approved then if any differences between Rome and the USCCB are left, those need to be worked out.

Does this apply to the translation of the Divine Office for UK?

Ah ha, but in Canada and the UK the NAB is not used, so would ours be updated? The NRSV and Jerusalem Bible is used…along with the Grail Psalms.
The current LOTH as translated by ICEL is authorized for Canada. The UK uses the Divine Office. My thoughts is that it will continue to be the case.

A friend of mine who knows someone in the ICEL says that the new translation of the breviary may be available in as soon as 18 months!!
Wow so that is really quicker than I thought it would be.

I really don’t care for the new translations of the psalms though, I think I am going to stick with the Old Grail.

God bless.

So if the new breviary is available from ICEL in 18 months, about how long will it take to get published, in your opinion?

I thought ICEL had been somewhat discredited during the Missal process. Would the Vox Clara Commission have any authority over breviary revisions?

18 months? Really? That’s a lot earlier then I thought to say the least.

I figured I’d be good with my current set for at least 5. Oh well.

A quick question for those who do not like the current Breviary, do any of you use the Anglican Breviary instead? I know several Catholics who seem to like it.

I’ve dabbled with the current LoTH, Monastic Diurnal (both Anglican and Catholic), the Divine Office (Angelus Press) and the LOBVM. Because I attend an OF parish, things just work better when I use the current LoTH. Each of the breviaries has it positives and negatives.

I’ve been playing breviary pong for about 6 years now and I think I’ll stick with the LoTH. Others may feel differently and that’s fine. Each person should do what he/she is called to do.

If you use it, you aren’t praying the Liturgy of the Hours, as it isn’t an official Church translation.
I was under the impression that Anglican Use Parishes used it. If it is, it could hardly be viewed as incorrect.

Either way, does anyone have an update on the release of the new translation of the Office?

Peace, and Happy New Year!

They may be using it through a dispensation.

A dispensation that is granted to one person or even a group does not apply to everyone. A dispensation only applies to those it is granted to.

So if some form of prayer is granted as a dispensation for a person or group to fill the canonical requirement of praying the hours then that does not mean that others can do so nor does this make that form into a valid choice for others who wish to pray the hours with the Church.

I suggest everyone keep a very close eye on this link:

vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccdds/documents/rc_con_ccdds_vox-clara_index_en.html

It details all the actions of the Vox Clara Committee, the committee which has de facto overtaken ICEL.

At their latest meeting, this is what they had to say:
The Committee heard reports on the widespread distribution of the Study Text on the Roman Missal and approved plans for several future publications on behalf of the Congregation, most notably an interim edition of the Roman Pontifical, including new translations of several pontifical texts drawn from the Roman Missal. It is planned that the publication will also include the Rite for the Blessing of Oils and it should be available in the first months of 2012. The publication of a collection of commemorative essays on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the instruction Liturgiam Authenticam, under the title Toward an Authentic and Clear Voice, as well as several editions of the Missale Parvum, was also authorized.
It seems they’re mostly working on Pontifical texts right now.
