Think back to those halcyon days when you were newly married and just starting to keep house (or maybe you’re a newlywed now). Did you make any blunders which you can laugh at now in retrospect?

Here’s what I did:
I washed my husband’s black socks with some new yellow towels. Got lint all over them. To make matters worse, without telling me first, he took the socks home to Mother to get them de-fuzzed.

I insisted that I knew better than he how to cook the pork chops he brought home, and then proceeded to fry them, turning them into shoe leather.

We were living in an old apartment building that had its share of cockroaches. One day I saw a roach disappear into an opening in the oven door. I freaked out. I got a screw driver and tried to open up the door. The whole thing fell apart–glass, insulation and all. I remember my husband muttering to himself as he was putting the oven door back together. Never did get the roach.

Not a whole lot for me - I did most of that stuff back at my parents house. I do experiment with cooking a lot, so we have the occasional HORRID dinner (it usually works well, but every so often . . .), and I also multi-task while cooking and forget about the food and burn it occasionally, but that wasn’t ever anything about being newlywed. I’m just a ditz sometimes 😊

My DH ran into some, as a SAHD - mostly involving laundry. Mostly involving MY laundry!

Lessee, there was the point about two months after the twins were born, and I was able to fit into my first pair of pre-pregnancy pants 😃 Which DH then washed, because he was doing laundry & cooking while I focused on the babies. And shrunk, so they didn’t fit me anymore! I cried. 😦 And then told my MIL, who was very sympathic - poor DH!

There have also been a couple instances of him washing bright-red, brand-new never-been-washed items (or red hand-wash only items) with a load of whites, causing everything to come out pink :o Since DH only wears dark colors . . . yep, my clothes were the main thing that got ruined. 😛 It was bad enough the first time, but the second time I was just ROFL.

But he cooked a turkey right on his first try! 👍 I still haven’t even attempted it.

P.S. - smilies rock. I used my limit for this post!

How about one I’m still laughing over?

We still live in our tiny “New York City” style apartment that we moved into when we were first married over 10 years ago. Our kitchen is so tiny that available counter-space is high-priced real estate and the kitchen follows the design at the time the building was built in the 1960’s.

Where to put the free-standing microwave???

While our wedding flowers were still fresh, I came up with the idea of setting up the microwave in the dining room. Makes sense, right? Food in the dining room, food in the microwave. Perfect,

I’ve worn out the carpet from the kitchen to the dining room from walking back and forth from the stove/counter to the microwave. I hadn’t realized how much you use the microwave in the course of preparing meals.

Now we can laugh at it, but I still hope someday to have room in the kitchen for a microwave even if I have to hang one from the ceiling.

😃

Oh my… yeah… laundry and cooking were NOT my forte early on in marriage. Not by a LONG SHOT! :o
I still can’t claim to be a domestic goddess like my MIL (she REALLY IS!), so that comparison can’t be lived up to… but it does get better with time. ;)😛

:rotfl:
HAHA… same story here… only it’s our LAUNDRY ROOM (right off the kitchen) where our microwave sits…
There’s nothing like the beautiful mixed scents of dryer sheets and popcorn!😃

Your mistake was marrying a guy who still had his mom doing his laundry.

My wife has no such funny stories because she could do (almost) everything better than I had been doing them in my apartments/condo prior to us marrying!

The only one I can think of for her was when we tried painting a rom together and I found pushing the paintbrush bristle end first. She got banned from further painting (price a Purdy brush lately?) and I’m starting to think she actually conned me… 😉

Well, when we first got married I was a “my-way-or-the-highway” type of girl (ok, so I still am but I’m much more diplomatic about it now). Maybe it’s from being the youngest:o.

Anyway, I wouldn’t call it a fight, but I wanted something done my way and dh didn’t and wouldn’t give it. (I am so embarrassed now) but I actually stamped my foot like a three year old

My dh just laughed and said, " Did you just stamp your foot at me? Cause that’s not gonna work." (I’m laughing as I write this, man was I a brat).

well I was married 4-5 years before we actually got new appliances, and this was true then and is probably still true, when the Sears guy installs the appliance and takes everything away, it is still not ready to use–there is styrofoam, plastic wrap, labels, rubberbands, cardboard and all kinds of debris hiding where the sun don’t shine, and if you don’t remove it, especially with an appliance that generates heat–dryer, range, etc, you are in big trouble the smell alone will kill you

:rotfl:
She STILL does his laundry! LOL…
We pay her (she needs the extra spending $$) and it’s a HUGE help to me (cuts down on our load size and I hate ironing his work shirts! :p)

I call that WIN-WIN! 😃

My dearly departed MIL was a good woman, but felt compelled to remind me FOREVER of little things that had gone wrong. Grrrr…

The first Thanksgiving after we were married, my husband was in grad school and his parents came to stay for several days. My mother had never let me help much with preparing meals (it was easier to do it herself, and she was the impatient type…I know where I get it from) so it was the first turkey I had ever cooked. I had no idea about the little bag containing the innards, neck, etc., and cooked the turkey with all that inside. I would periodically hear about that until MIL’s memory failed decades later.

As a MIL myself now, it’s easier because I have SILs, so I don’t feel the need to compete.

we’re planning on doing this very thing in the next couple weeks…:eek::eek:

why is this such a no-no? btw, neither of us has ever even witnessed the hanging of wall paper. maybe ignorance is bliss? 😛

Everyone makes mistakes, and lots of them!

Being apparently immune to marriage, I have to make the mistakes all by myself. Which, over the years, has led to some pretty funny situations.

I have sympathy for everyone who makes silly goofs, because I have made so many myself.

It is not the mistakes that matter, but the decency and good hearts of the people who make them.

Wait, you are doing it together but neither of you has done it before. Oh, dear. :tiphat:

I made a pretty bad mistake during our honeymoon in Disney World: I took my husband out into the park one morning on an empty stomach!! I had no idea that men actually have to have food in their tummies in order to act, well, bearable. The whole time, he kept saying, “Why don’t they have any pretzel booths here? Who designed this place? What kind of idiots would have all this space without a pretzel booth?”

Finally, I found something called a Pineapple Float for him to eat. Have any of you Disney World fans ever discovered this little treasure? It was so good that he immediately became sweet again, and I’ve never let him go without food since then!

Because criminal defense attorneys are so expensive! 😉

When I was young and dumb and newly married my husband and I received a set of black towels for a wedding gift–we thought they were sooo sexy. Anyway, we took a shower together one night and dried off with our new towels and then looked at each other with horror–we were both covered head to toe with black lint from the towels! Oh what a sight:eek: I did not know you are supposed to wash new towels before using them:o

Having been in the hanging wallpaper together situation before, I would say ignorance IS bliss:D

One time was enough for us.

Me too - except I’m the oldest 😃
After 11 years I’ve learned to mellow. Although I have to say, he doesn’t give me much to stamp my foot about anyway:thumbsup:

Thanks for this thread - I’ve been lol’ing!

This is my dh, too. He turns into a big grumpus when he’s hungry. LOL good to know it’s not just mine.

I was out of my parents house for about 4 years before getting married so I haven’t really had any. I’m sure with a new baby they’ll be plenty to come for both my husband and me.
