New changes in mass

Hey all,

I’m Aaron, 26 years old. Over the past couple months, I’ve returned to the Catholic Church after almost 14 years away . I was raised catholic and went to catholic school, but after that I just kind of fizzled out. Now I have a family and my son is to be baptized next month! But I’ve noticed some changes in the mass, not in a bad way just different. I’m sure every church does things SLIGHTLY different, was just wondering if anyone could give me some insight on when these changes happened and why. Just curious

-when mass begins, the priest says peace be with you, and now we say “and with your spirit” used to be “and also with you”

-we do the Nicene Creed now instead of Apostles creed?

-act of contrition is more modern… The one that says “in choosing to do wrong and failing to do good”. Had never heard that one used before coming back

• before communion, we no longer says “Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed”. Instead we say "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” what’s that all about??

All of these adjustments are more accurate to the original Latin text, the older translation was missing crucial words as you’ve noticed.

The third edition of the Roman Missal came out in 2002. It took quite a long time for the English translation to follow. The English translation was approved and implemented in 2011.

Correct.

The recitation of the Nicene Creed at Sunday Mass is not new. It is the typical version in the US, although the Apostle’s Creed is allowed. It may just be the preference of your current pastor.

You say you’ve been away 14 years, so unless you lived somewhere that had an indult to use it all the time, back before the third edition, the Apostles’ Creed could be used during Lent, Easter and at Masses for Children. In some countries (Canada for example) they had an indult to recite it any time. So, not sure why you said it every week if it was prior to the third edition, which 2000 and before would be.

Are you referring to the Confiteor during Mass? If so, that is not the proper wording. And I don’t know why you would be saying those words.

If you are referring to acts of contrition used during the sacrament of confession-- there are MANY acts of contrition (that is not new, there have always been many different act of contrition prayers). You may use any you like.

This is the Confiteor that should be used in Mass:

I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done
and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault,
through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Yes, again, this is the English translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by John Paul II in 2002 and finally translated and approved in 2011 for those of us in English speaking countries.

Most of what you described is just a new translation. Some of the old translation was not done as well as it could have been, and besides that language changes over time so updates to a translation of anything after a period of time isn’t really a bad idea.

The Apostles Creed vs Nicene Creed is a case where either one is considered acceptable and it is up to the Priest or Bishop to decide.

There were some changes in the Mass wording a few years ago to make it more in line with the actual translation. You can see a comparison of old and new wording here:

Generally, the Nicene Creed should have been used all along, except with maybe Children’s Masses.

Act of Contrition for confession - you are really free to use whatever form you know. Some places will teach certain forms, but no particular one is required.
