Great Forum Post!

Does anyone know if there are any religious communities for older single women in Texas?

I will be 45 (single) in May and my mother (widow) is 74 in June.🙂

There are quite a few that I know of. Is your mother looking to join, too, or are you just looking for yourself?

Benedictines of Canyon, TX (25-60)

Carmel of Christoval, TX (no age limit)

Carmel of Dallas, TX (no age limit)

Corpus Christi Carmelites
(no age limit)

Starr County Benedictines (no age limit)

I have a question re entering a religious order that is overseas in another country.

If one does decide to enter a religious order overseas, what usually happens if one is accepted. Does one do an aspirancy and then have to leave for a period before returning to begin postulancy if the community is in agreement re entering, or is this waived for overseas applicants? (i.e. can one do an aspirancy and then immediately enter postulancy if suitable - and not leave for a period?)

Would it be up to a particular religious community? It seems to me that one would need to have an answer to this question before actually travelling overseas.

Each community is different, but some of the answer depends on practicalities like foreign visas. It is usually quite easy to get a visitors visa to a country but a residence visa is a different matter and often requires that the community promise the government that they will support or sponsor the candidate. I doubt that many communities would agree to act as sponsor to someone who has not already visited them, and once having entered a country on a visitor visa, it is usually necessary then for the candidate to leave said country while applying for the residency visa.

That being said, there are some individuals who have dual nationality or access to residency visas for other reasons. In such a case, a community might simply ask that a candidate take some time after the visit to consider their decision, perhaps while staying in their guesthouse. No matter how convinced one is that they want to make the move, taking time to reflect and pray after a visit is a good idea. After all, writing to someone is a lot different than actually living with them - the same goes for communities.

As I said, each community is different and would handle this situation differently.
