I was reading the Bible today and came upon this set of verses that interested me:
“25 In ages past you laid the foundations of the earth and made the heavens with your hands! 26 They shall perish, but you go on forever. They will grow old like worn-out clothing, and you will change them like a man putting on a new shirt and throwing away the old one! 27 But you yourself never grow old. You are forever, and your years never end.” (TCLB, Psalm 102: 25-27)
(or if you don’t like a paraphrase, here is a more “literal” translation)
“25 Of old thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of thy hands. 26 They will perish, but thou dost endure; they will all wear out like a garment. Thou changest them like raiment, and they pass away; 27 but thou art the same, and thy years have no end.” (RSV: CE, Psalm 102: 25-27)
So assuming I’m understanding these verses correctly (which I don’t claim to completely understand), once our universe ends (does it? I’ve read about the possibility of a shrinking and expanding universe, but a dying universe?) does this mean God may create a new universe, ie a new creation? Is it possible that God has created multiple universes before this “current” one we (as humans) are now living in? If I’m re-reading Genesis 1 correctly, it talks primarily about creation of the Earth and our solar system, as well as the formation of stars (our galaxy only or the whole universe?), and the creation of humanity.
I would like to think that we are the only ones who are made in God’s image, but assuming universes “die,” does this mean there could have been other “creations” made in God’s image in these previous hypothetical universes?
There’s the possibility I’m taking this all out of context but when I read that Psalm, I immediately thought of all these questions and “what if?” scenarios.
