News Release from the Melkite Patriarch . . .

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has given his assent to the election of two archbishops, canonically elected by the Holy Synod of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, at Ain Traz on 25 June 2010.

They are:
The Most Rev. Archbishop Cyril Salim Bustros, hitherto Eparch of Newton (USA), elected Metropolitan of Beirut and Jbeil, Lebanon;
The Most Rev. Bishop Issam John Darwish, B. S., hitherto Eparch of St Michael the Archangel of Sydney, (Australia and New Zealand), elected Archbishop of Zahleh and Furzol, Lebanon.
15 June 2011

As of today, 15 June 2011, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, at the proposal of the Holy Synod of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, has named two hierarchs for the eparchies of our expansion vacant as a result of the transfer of their respective eparchs to other eparchies.

They are:
The Most Rev. Nicholas James Samra, hitherto titular Bishop of Gerasa and former Protosynkellos of the Eparchy of Newton, (USA), named Eparch of the same Eparchy of Newton;

The Rt. Rev. Archim. Robert Rabbat, hitherto rector of the Eparchial Cathedral of Newton and editor-in-chief of the eparchy’s journal Sophia, named Eparch of St Michael the Archangel of Sydney (Australia and New Zealand).

They are worthy!

A happy day for U.S. Melkites, one of our own elevated to Eparch!

Does the Pope have to give assent to an episcopal election that takes place inside the territory of a patriarchate? I understand that the current rules are that he appoints the bishops outside the patriarchate but the above press release indicates the pope gave his assent to the election which was inside the patriarchate also. Did I understand that correctly?

I believe the involvement was was because they were both coming FROM outside of the historic territories.

I was wondering if perhaps that might be the explanation. Thanks.

Axios! Many years!

Finally. Great news!
I just met Bishop Nicholas for the first time June 5 at St. Elias in San Jose. Our Deacon asked me to go. Bishop Nicholas ordained him some years ago. I was deeply impressed by his interactions with everyone. It’s all very exciting. 🙂
Archbishop Cyrille Bustros, 72, until now Bishop of Newton, Massachusetts, has been elected Metropolitan Archbishop of Beirut and Jbeil. He succeeds Archbishop Joseph Kallas, 79, who has retired for reasons of age.
LOL They must find Archbishop Cyrille a young 72. 😉

AXIOS! A very blessed day for the Melkite Patriarchate indeed.

I hope all the best for Metropolitan +Cyril Bustros, that he may lead the faithful of Lebanon to stay there, to be strong, and fight against the Islamic terrorist “resistance” (and their delusional so-called Christian allies) that work against them.

Axios to Bishop +Nicholas as well! I’ve listened to his sermons at my local parish and he is a very wise leader. He spoke about organizing an ecumenical gathering of Eastern Catholic Church Bishops, clergy, and laity from America to happen this year I believe. I hope his efforts to bring the Eastern Catholic communities together with more communication would bring forth real progress someday.

Yes you did. But the reason the Pope had to give assent to an episcopal election that took place inside the territory of the of a patriarchate at this time is because Archbishop Cyril Bustros was appointed as Eparch of Newton USA by the Pope as the same go for Bishop Issam Darwish was appointed as Eparch of St Michael for Australia and New Zealand by the Pope. So the Synod can’t remove them from their post without the approval of the Pope. Here the Pope gave his Blessing to the Synod by realizing them back to their patriarchate and appointing two new Eparchs to replace their previous post.

Well, this is wonderful for the Eparchy of Newton…didn’t know this was going to happen. Was anyone here at the Cathedral last time the Bishop celebrated? If so, was that Bishop Cyrill or Bishop Nicolas?

Anyways, this is fantastic for the Melkie Church in America. Even as a Roman Catholic…I am quite happy considering I periodically attend the Melkite Cathedral.

🙂

There are two other Patriarchal territories in Lebanon: Syriac Catholic and Maronite. The Holy See (Congregation for Eastern Churches) has a role in those areas of the Mid-East. Perhaps it is for this reason that the assent is obtained.

As soon as I will have a recent photo of our New Eparch; His Most Rev Nicholas James Samra will send it to you. You could use this photo for now on just going to this site:

I think I should have included the Armenian Patriarch of Cilicia with proper eparchy in Beirut.

I believe that he is first Catholicos of Cilicia and by default given the title Patriarch by Rome. Unless I’m mistaken, even the Annuario Pontificio shows the title as Catholicos-Patriarch. But anyway, just because Rome bestows a title doesn’t mean that title is either historic or authentic. 🤷
