Will there ever be published a complete Old and New Testament Bible that will include the New Grail Psalms?

How long until we see such a thing?

I’m guessing it won’t happen since the parties that hold the copyrights to popular versions of the Bible don’t hold the copyright to the revised Grail Psalter.

GIA (which had nothing per se to do with revising this translation of the Psalms) has been granted exclusive rights by the USCCB to administer the copyright and certainly would not let such a monopoly slip away without substantial compensation (millions)–something that must Bible publishers would probably not be willing to pay in order to publish a Bible that would include a revised Grail Psalter.

Collins publishing out of the UK currently prints an edition with the NRSV and original Grail Psalms. I have been told that once they adapt the NRSV for Mass in the UK, they will publish an edition with the adapted NRSV and Revised Grail Psalms.

Is there any chance that the USCCB would drop the psalms in the NAB.RE and have the New Grail Psalter put in?

The reason I ask is that in Great Brittain there was an edition of the Jerusalem bible with the Old Grail Psalms in it.

Look folks–the USCCB authorized the New Grail Psalter for mass so they must not have alot of problems with its translation and they didn’t authorize the psalms from the NAB.RE–evidently they did have problems with its translation of the Psalms–if they didn’t they at least figured that the Holy See would.

IF people in the next few years come to like the New Grail Psalter in mass–it would seem that if the USCCB truely want the NAB-RE to gain traction as the pre-eminent Catholic translation that they would just insert the New Grail Psalms.

That way some could attain their goal of “A young woman will conceive” instead of “a virgin will conceive”–“Hail favored one” instead of “Hail Mary Full of Grace” and for the icing on the cake they could continue publishing NAB bibles with the footnotes from Hell!

I’m not saying that All American bishops would be trying to achieve these things–I do wonder if some of the modern translation historical criticism crowd wouldn’t be thrilled at such possibilities.

From my viewpoint–inserting the New Grail Psalms would be IMPROVING the NAB–
I don’t like the NAB but at least the Psalms would be better with their inclusion.

IF the people who own the copyright to the RSV-CE2 came to the USCCB and wanted to published that bible WITH the New Grail Psalms inserted–what would the USCCB do? Would they prohibit such a version?

The USCCB doesn’t publish Bibles, so it would be up to an individual publisher to print an NABRE with Revised Grail Psalms. Although, I must say that I think the NABRE Psalms are a tremendous improvement over the '91 NAB Psalms. I even prefer them to the Revised Grail Psalms, but thats just me.

They could probably do it–but they would have to pay GIA through the nose; otherwise they’d be breaking copyright law. The copyright is co-owned by the Grail and Conception Abbey, but the copyright is administered by GIA (who also takes a cut–I think 10%) for anyone who uses the Revised Grail Psalter in any way, shape or form that’s beyond fair use.

Is it just me–or is there something wrong with this picture?

The Vatican publishes countless zillions of documents and papal encyclicals in English but the Word of God–the Bible-- is not translated from Latin into English in the case of the Nova Vulgata–the juridicial text of the Bible for the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church.

The Grail Psalms which will be used in the mass will not be in any English bible.

Not only that but some other parts of the bible that are used in the mass cannot be found in any bible!

Would the world end if a Catholic laymen were able to have a bible that MATCHED the mass?!

Wouldn’t it be of great value if a Protestant were to come to mass and then looked up parts of the mass in a Catholic Bible and saw that they MATCHED?!

Isn’t the REAL reason this doesn’t happen is that in most cases the Latin bible is the closest there is to ACCURATE and the Holy See will not authorize the Mickey Mouse translations for some passages from many modern Catholic bibles to be used in the Mass?!

I wish the Holy See would Withdraw the authority of the bishops of various countries such as the USCCB to authorize translations of the bible and would do that job itself.

Something tells me we’d get more accurate translations of the bible and that it might be even possible in that scenario for a Catholic translation to MATCH what was used in Mass.

Pray for the help of St. Jerome for Catholic translations of the bible!

The Catholic Truth Society (UK) Bible comprises the Jerusalem Bible + Grail Psalter:
**What’s New in the New Catholic Bible **
Alongside the Jerusalem and Grail translations authorised by the Vatican for use in the Liturgy:
  • New specially commissioned introductions, one for each book, giving the biblical and historical context
  • New specially commissioned liturgical introductions placing each book of the Bible in the Church’s liturgical year
  • New footnotes following the latest scholarship
  • New marginal references helping you get the most out of each passage.
  • New layout – using clear and modern fonts in easy-to-read single-column format
  • New text alterations, replacing the word ‘Yahweh’ with ‘the LORD’ as requested by Benedict XVI for all new Bibles
  • New directories of references for readings used in the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours, including the fuller two-year cycle for the Breviary.

Let’s hope and pray that there is just one single and universal Catholic Bible for all the Catholic regions in the world; the Holy See should revoke the permissions given for the various translations.

The Catholic Truth Society (UK) Bible comprises the Jerusalem Bible + Grail Psalter:
This Bible should be in every home. It is approved for the Liturgy in the UK (something the Nabre can’t say.) It has the first Jerusalem Bible (not the New one with more inclusive language) and the Grail Psalter. I have the compact edition from the Catholic Truth Society. It has to be ordered from England here The link is for the “standard size” edition.

The current revision of the NAB NT will be complete hopefully by 2025. After that, there will be a Bible published with the new NT, the 2010 OT and the Revised Grail Psalter. The text will match the readings in a newly revised lectionary and Liturgy of the Hours. That’s the plan, anyway!

Here is a transcript from the USCCB discussion back in 2012: catholicbiblesblog.com/2012/09/usccb-and-nab-report.html

And it seems like 2025 is perhaps even an ambitious goal, according to the article??? 🙂
