MANCHESTER — Manchester Bishop John B. McCormack is encouraging Roman Catholics to lobby their state representatives against a bill that would allow pharmacists to dispense the morning-after pill without a prescription.
McCormack said he has asked pastors to encourage their parishioners to contact their state representatives and urge them to vote against Senate Bill 30.
The legislation has already passed the New Hampshire Senate and is scheduled for a House vote on Wednesday.
“The proposed legislation affronts human life and parental rights,” McCormack said. “I call on all state representatives to recognize their responsibility to serve the common good by upholding the right to human life from the moment of conception and to recognize the right and responsibilities of parents to be involved in the welfare of their children.”
The bill would allow properly trained pharmacists to sell high doses of hormones without a prescription to women who believe they are about to become pregnant.
Supporters call it emergency contraception, but opponents say the medication could end up destroying a fertilized egg.
