New Haydock Douay-Rheims Bible

Does anybody have detailed pics of this bible? All I can find are pics of the front cover. Does it have pictures and content the same as the original or just plain text with commentary?

I think you’ve lost most of us. I looked at the 21 entries at amazon.com and I can’t begin to imagine which of these (if at all) you may be referring to.

You may be way ahead of us all.

I guess that one says large print. Am interested in regular print. Just most places only show the cover and wanted to see more of what’s inside. If there are illustrations, how the commentary looks and all that.

I’ve wonder what the inside looks like myself. Its hard to purchase a Study Bible without having some idea what it looks like inside.

I searched for about ten minutes. Many listings on Google books have a preview of the inside. I can’t find this one. Maybe it would be best to contact the publisher directly. I too am interested.

It’s a big book. Almost two inches thick and close to five pounds. Yikes!

I’ve encountered expensive books without sewn binding so it is important to ask. Any book that expensive with a glued binding is a complete ripoff. A book this expensive, if taken care of, should be constructed to last hundreds of years.

The publisher has it on sale by the way. $20 off on their website right now. $105 beats Amazon by thirty dollars.

Didn’t realize it was just a glued binding. Thought it would be better since they where trying to make it look like the 1800’s cover and that big of a book.

Does it have a glued binding? I would not think so for a book this expensive.

I was not saying that it had a glued binding, just saying to ask, that’s all.

Glued bindings are not so bad really. Modern glues are relatively permanent and dependable, if the book is properly bound. Glued bindings are also very easily repaired either professionally of even by amateurs.

You’ll notice that the typical Catholic hymnal paperback is a glued binding and withstands much abuse, with the biggest problem being torn pages, curling pages and covers or missing covers.

I would prefer a stitched binding as much as anyone, but they have their weaknesses too. It is not uncommon for a stitched binding to break between two gatherings of stitched pages since the whole book is bound with glue to the spine anyway.

I am an amateur book binder and have repaired glued page Bibles for friends, and they are good to go for another 30 or more years of abuse.

Here’s an example below of a cheap glued binding Bible from the 70’s that I did for an Evangelical friend who had so many “valuable” notes inside that he wanted that Bible repaired, rather than buy another. I reinforced the whole spine with tough cloth. When I got it, it was being held together by duct tape and rubber bands! Scores of pages were crumpled and squashed into the spine area. Quite a mess. No, I didn’t charge him.

I have a copy, but I am not at home right now. It isn’t that great as far as craftsmanship goes, the content is what they are selling. No gilded edges, boards feel a little weak for such a heavy book. Completely black and white. Has a large dictionary in the back with illustrations. If you are looking for something that will last forever, I am not sure if it will, maybe if you don’t use it. It is made more as a study aid.

Point of Order: The one at Amazon.com is a LARGE PRINT edition. It’s apparently $20 more for that than for the non-large print version.

I’m almost certain there is only one version, which does have pretty large text for the bible, but really small text for the massive amount of commentary. I bought mine here for 100 bucks.

Found this Haydock DR on eBay and the seller has some up lose pics, not a lot though. Looks like a standard hardback book quality that will wear and crack over time. Plan on using it quite a bit.

That review of the St. Benidict press DR looks pretty good and looks like it would break in nice without cracking. I will probably go with that one over the one I posted. Thank you all for your insights and help.
