so will the old hell be destroyed along with the earth and heavens and will there be no more hell only new heavens and a new earth [see 2 Peter 3:10 & 15] - surely hell must go as also purgatory or else there will be weeping in heaven and heaven would not then be heaven - for an answer see A Travel Guide to Heaven by Anthony DeStefano - twinc

Note the word “eternal” in the Catechism regarding hell.

1056 Following the example of Christ, the Church warns the faithful of the “sad and lamentable reality of eternal death” , also called “hell.”

1057 Hell’s principal punishment consists of eternal separation from God in whom alone man can have the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

1861 Mortal sin … If it is not redeemed by repentance and God’s forgiveness, it causes exclusion from Christ’s kingdom and the eternal death of hell…”

How do I know it’s true? Because the Church said so— the same church which St Paul calls the pillar and foundation of Truth. :harp:

Rest assured that at the end there will be Heaven and hell. And we will all be in one or the other. My option is to choose the path to Heaven and worship and see God forever.

Hell isn’t going anywhere. The REALLY bad news is that people in Hell will get their bodies back at the end of time also, and the torments of Hell will apply to the spiritual as well as the physical There will be no weeping in Heaven.

is it not just possible that the same place could be heaven or hell for" two men looked out of prison bars and one saw muck and the other stars" and could not one man’s meat be anothers poison - twinc

I think the destruction of the heavens refers to a destruction of the physical heavens - sky, stars, etc - not the Spiritual Heaven. The Spiritual Heaven and Hell will remain unchanged.

My own personal belief is that at the end of time and after the final judgment, Hell will be shrunk to microscopic size. I can’t see much point in having a heaven, when just across the other side of the tracks is hell, with all it’s hideousness.

I think that Black Holes give us a physical example, in that they contain enormous amounts of matter in an infinitely small space.

In other words, out of sight, out of mind, but still terribly real to those inside.

It’s a pretty horrid thought really, especially when you consider its eternal, but that’s my take on it.

I agree that, compared to Heaven, Hell is microscopic – relatively.

But I disagree with with ‘out of sight, out of mind’

“That the saints may enjoy their beatitude and the grace of God more richly, a perfect sight of the punishment of the damned is granted them.”

St. Thomas Aquinas

God’s justice is good.

When you think about it, Hell is really one way God has of honoring man’s dignity: He lets us make free choices.

ah now free choice - now there is a topic for further discussion - twinc

That’s a philosophical concept which is not substantiated by scripture.

As I recall, C. S. Lewis described Hell as infinitesimal in The Great Divorce.

Yes, he had his inmates on release from Purgatory come up through a microscopic crack in the ground in a heraldically coloured bus, which then expanded to fit its new surroundings, if I remember rightly. Half of them preferred to go back to Hell. They found heaven too daunting.

strangely it is,so seek and ye shall find or watch this space - twinc
for some or many Catholics the Catechism is our source of elightement, and so as Catholics it is required that we accept that heaven is a place and also that hell is a place but nothing is against the acceptance that these two places are in the same place for they cannot be anywhere else -twinc

Nag, nag, nag.

I would say, since Jesus says (Luke 16, 19 -31) that Lazarus from the bosom of Abraham could look down and see the rich man who scorned him in torments, that Heaven and Perdition are two different places.

the answer is not as simple as you seem to have accepted or have us accept - Lazarus was not in heaven for heaven was shut as Christ had not yet died to open it up and secondly what is a place and where would you place it and thirdly there is no mention of up or down - twinc

From the Revised Standard Version - Second Catholic Edition of the Holy Bible, Luke 16, 22 and 23: 22 “…the rich man also died and was buried; 23. and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom.”
I submit, that since the rich man looked up to Abraham and Lazarus, that they were looking down at him.

Also, please provide documentation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church that Heaven was not open before Jesus died. And, by the way, where ever Abraham was in the after life, it was far off from Hades. In specific answer to your post, “…what is a place…” is more a philosophical question that should be handled on the Philosophy forum. Your question, “…and where would you place it…” must refer to places mentioned in the above scripture. Hades is a place. Where Abraham held Lazarus to his bosom was evidently, by context, a different place. I would think that Paradise is that different place.

When you read the Gospels closely, you will find that there are different places in the after life. Theres Gehenna, the Outer Darkness, Paradise, Heaven and the Lake of Fire all mentioned by Our Lord Jesus Christ. I deem each of these as separate places, their locations different from each other.
