New Islamic Fatwa condemning practising sports for females in schools.

There is a new Fatwa issued today by an official cleric here in Saudi Arabia condemning practising sports for females in their schools.

From reading the two Arabic articles (1) (2), it seems that the cleric based his fatwa on this quranic verse:
(Quran 24:21):
“O ye who believe! follow not Satan’s footsteps: if any will follow the footsteps of Satan, he will (but) command what is shameful and wrong: and were it not for the grace and mercy of Allah on you, not one of you would ever have been pure: but Allah doth purify whom He pleases: and Allah is One Who hears and knows (all things).”

NOW THAT IS REALLY TOO MUCH, what they want to do with females here in SA, prohibiting driving and they have accepted that, BUT prohibiting practising sports in female only schools IS REALLY TOO MUCH.

Human Rights Watch should step in and force democracy in the Arabic world so that we sometimes need to say NO…

Yeh, forcing democracy on the Arabic world would work - look at the great success of democracy in Pakistan in the last 60 years.

The problem with these sorts of threads, Sam, is that we all know it’s completely bonkers, my guess is that most Muslim members/visitors to CAF think it’s completely bonkers but, surely, there comes a time when Muslims have to stop blaming naughty Jews, naughty Americans, naughty Westerners and so on and get their own act together - perhaps to prove to themselves that it’s possible to have a Muslim society not entirely based on imprisoning women and annoying goats.

I’m sorry Sam, you’ve missed my sarcasm - I was implying that Muslim societies were about imprisoning women and Muslim economies (not so much the oil-based ones, obviously) were about goat-herding.

Hello Sam.

Its really sad how some take the religion to such extremes without knowing its consequences. Wish the religious authority would take advice ffrom medical professionals too before jumping with such fatwas.

There is no central authority, as there is in the Catholic Church, and a fatwa from any local Muslim imam has about the same effect as a doctrinal ruling from the paster of the First Baptist Church of East Podunk.

In this case, there are those who will take it seriously, but it’s not like every Muslim in the world is suddenly going to demonstrate in the streets against girls on sports teams.

Thirdly, don’t forget that Saudi Arabia is the host of Islamic two holy mosques, where Muhammed born and died, and it’s considered as the leader between the Islamic countries, for example, when we fast Ramadan, most Islamic countries follow our calender.

Sam, regarding those sort of police, part of Indonesia, a province named Aceh is also given a special status of establishing sharia there, so it also comes with the “guardian force”, the similar force like SA’s police. They watch over the kind of acceptable hijab to be worn by muslims women, ensuring that no muslim single ever touch each other or go dating by themselves, no men don’t perform Friday prayer and so on (really they have too much time doing this sort of business!!). But I haven’t heard that sport would become harram for women, unless they think that they have to follow SA sometime in the future…gosh…!!
