New Latin Mass site in San Francisco

At the request of Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite will begin to be celebrated at Star of the Sea Parish, 4420 Geary Boulevard (at 8th Avenue) in San Francisco on May 26th, Trin*ity Sunday, at 11:00 A.M. and will continue each Sunday and Holy Day on a regular basis.

To learn more about the Extraordinary Form Latin Mass you are invited to Star of the Sea School Auditorium for meetings on Tuesdays, May 7th, May 14th, and May 21st at 7:00 P.M. For further information please contact the pastor of Star of the Sea Parish, Father Mark G. Mazza, at 415-751-0450, extension 16.

It’s good to see a Archbishop Cordileone believes in accommodating Traditionalist Catholics. It must be very difficult to be Archbishop of a modern day Sodom (and I apologize for any CAF members who live in San Francisco).
Let us pray for his Grace so that he continues to serve God and his flock with distinction.

Once a TLM has been established in a diocese, can a new Bishop take it away?

We’re getting a new Bishop soon.

I live nearby and yes, he’s in a difficult place, but he’s absolutely the right man for the job. He’s done a great job so far of being outspoken in a positive way. We’re really blessed to have him, I hope he becomes a Cardinal.

I recognized that church instantly it was used in the film “WHAT’S UP DOC”.

Beautiful church, but I still prefer the Old Cathedral in Chinatown.

Whoever called SF “Sodom” does not know what he is talking about, plenty of normal people live there, lots of Catholic churches and lots of schools with lots of children.

I don’t know about a Bishop, I would assume so, but I know a new pastor can take it away. That just happened at Mission San Buenaventura a couple of months ago - when the new pastor arrived he eliminated the well attended Latin Mass that had been there for 15 years. One thing he stated was that tourists and pilgrims didn’t feel comfortable entering the church during their afternoon Mass. That Latin Mass community tried to work things out with him, move Mass to 6am, etc. but to no avail.

Like I said, I apologize to any San Franciscans offended by my comment. It was said in a (rather poorly thought out) attempt at humour. :o

However, the politics of San Francisco is still pretty toxic, in my opinion, and that was what I was referring to. Bishop Cordileone has his work cut out for him dealing with the Pelosis and Newsoms.
 
This is wonderful news! Prior to this we’ve only had the EF in parishes outside of San Francisco proper, making it quite difficult for San Franciscans who do not drive (which is most of us) to attend. Not too long ago they began having the EF at a small chapel on the outskirts of the city, but that was changed to only the first Sunday. I’ll be sure to attend on Trinity Sunday! 🙂

Indeed! He was my bishop when I lived in Oakland, and I was ecstatic when we got the news that he was to become our bishop here in SF. Given the great effort he made as Bishop of Oakland to frequently visit St. Margaret Mary’s Parish in Oakland (which is an exclusively EF parish, with a daily EF Mass), I’ve honestly been waiting for him to start advocating for the EF here ever since he was installed as Bishop.

I love St. Margaret Mary’s Parish, I go there for confession, and as often as I can for mass 🙂

The comments below the announcement are very interesting, and for the most part uplifting.

I find it a great irony that so many people --not just here but in many locations-- have felt the need to ‘stay in the closet,’ almost literally, about their preference for the Latin Mass, or simply their appreciation of it. You can almost hear the giant sigh of relief from the Comments. And yet there’s still an atmosphere in the modern Church which makes such Catholics feel as if they need to apologize for it.

Latin = un-PC
EF = target for mockery
reverence = so “yesterday”
 
Fr. Mazza is very orthodox, we have a chance to make Star of the Sea Church the traditional parish in the Archdiocese, please show up to the ef mass and the meetings on tuesday. Contact me with any questions. Thanks.
 
I’m saddened to see that this news isn’t being more widely reported in the archdiocese. The website says nothing about this, CalCatholic (the Archdiocese’s official newsletter) is silent. I’ve even perused various parish bulletins online but to no avail.

I’ve been trying to spread the news by mouth to whoever will listen. Outside of the OP link and this thread on CAF, there’s really no source propagating this information. Hopefully we can bump this thread periodically.
