I’m wondering if anyone has had the chance to check out the new Maronite “Book of Offering.” It contains the official translation(s) of the Maronite Qurbono in English, Arabic and Syriac. Just curious to discover if the translation is any better than the previous… 👍

This is a dynamic-equivalence translation of the 2005 version of the Missal. Any Syriac that may appear is actually inconsequential to the so-called translation, since the basis of that translation is the Arabic text, which itself differs quite markedly from the Syriac. (Even the Syriac differs from what appeared in the predecessor version of 1992, but I digress.)

As to whether the translation is better than the prior version, that would, I suppose, be a matter of opinion. Mine is that it is far worse, since (a) the previous translation was less of a dynamic equivalence and (b) certain parts of the previous translation were made based on the actual Syriac text, and (c) the Arabic text of the 1992 version was itself less tainted than the current one.

Thanks, Malphono. I can always count on you for solid info. 👍 It’s greatly appreciated.

Do you know if it’s still possible to obtain hard copies of the older translation(s) for the sake of comparison with the newly issued translation?

There are digital versions floating around a few places and they were clearing out the warehouse to make room for the new books so they sent out whatever they had left to the parishes so you can probably ask a parish if they have any.

I got the Qurbono for 1592, Pre-1992, 1992 and 2005 from here beith-morounoye.org/prayers/index.html - I don’t know how accurate these are, I think malphono will know, he seems to know all things Maronite lol
😊

Anyway, I’ve used that site for years, and their offerings are excellent. Of course they aren’t of interest to most people since they’re mainly in Syriac.
I hadn’t seen that section of their website, but I think Phillip now has exactly what he wanted. 😃

ATTN Phillip: Please download and save those files ASAP. They may not (read: probably will not) be there long. Easier and cheaper to have a PDF copy than trying to get the books. 😛
Although I can’t find the new Qurbono I hope this was helpful
Maybe it’s better not to find the new one. 😉

And I don’t understand why that is the case 🤷 Because for me they are of great interest because they are in Syriac, I love Syriac and I’m currently trying to learn it - so far I’ve learned the Our Father and a few phrases but that is about it. 😊

Yes! And if you have one of those mini-drives you can download it to that, that is what I did
Maybe it’s better not to find the new one. 😉
hahaha sadly… I think you are right! 😉
