New Mass translation not popular in Africa --- what a bunch of garbage they are reporting!

This just makes me totally furious!!! To suggest that making the Mass MORE faithful to the original Latin is “an attempt to roll back progress”…are these people insane? If they considered for one second what the intent of this is, and not be so stuck in what THEY want (always me me me all the time), they might have a chance at learning something!

Well, here’s the secret. :doh2: If a priest doens’t like the new translation (when it is official) he doesn’t have to use it. He is always perfectly free to use the original text - IN LATIN!

What these “experts” fail to acknowledge is that the translation we are crrently using is garbage - both from a prayer standpoint and a translation one. Vox Clara gave the ICEL litterally decades to do a better job and they kept stalling and making stupid translation errors.

Yes, it will be a bit clumsy at first. But with just the barest minimum of Catechesis on the significance of certain words and phrases (ie “and with your Spirit”), no honest Catholic would hold onto his objections for long.

Why do you even bother listening to the news? The media wants to make the Pope look bad, so they use a stupid story - without even knowing anything about Catholicism - to paint the Pope as an evil man. Why thank you SO MUCH for instructing me on how to live my spiritual life!! My goodness, I had NO IDEA I was so ignorant regarding such things as focusing on Jesus.

Well - I have news for you. Living with my head under a rock is no way to spread the Truth. We should ALL be aware of such slander and ignorance in the media so that when we are confronted with it by those around us we can correct the errors.

I DO pay attention to ignorant journalists so that they can be called on the carpet when they are idiots. See that link in my signature? **Our job is to PUT the focus on Jesus Christ and make sure good Catholics aren’t stupid Catholics, so that they can get to heaven. **That they are made fully aware of when the media is lying to them and to call the main stream media to the task. Yes - we are only one lone news outlet, but we do have a voice, and living under a rock is no way to speak the Truth.

My suggestion to you my dear friend is to not make assumptions about someone’s spiritual life based on one post in an internet forum.

I don’t care. I am just giving them a choice.

Even if the seminaries let down a whole generations of priests by not requiring Latin, it is intellectually dishonest for a priest of the Latin Rite to not at least try to learn the basics of the language. With all of the documents of the Church in Latin, what kind of shepherds are they if they base their teaching on translations of variable quality? It isn’t just about the Mass or the vernacular, it’s about the identity of a Latin Rite cleric.

So, I have very little sympathy.

Corki, I have been in the language biz, and I have used people who have “been to a class” in the technology field, and I think it’s dangerous and naive to think that anyone who has taken latin in seminary is qualified to translate documents of the Church authoritatively.

Where did I say that? I said they should, and I quote myself:

You don’t have to be qualified to translate to be able to check a document and see what word was originally used. Does anyone really need a high level of language skill to see that “et cum spritu tuo” doesn’t mean “and with you”?

Grrr, indeed. I think this whole scenario is very revealing. I am excited about the new translation as it offers an excellent chance for catechesis. We must not drop the ball in this regard. People are going to want to know why these words are changing. Most run-of-the-mill Catholics are open to change provided they understand it.

I also find this process very helpful in catechesis. If the bishops and pope are going through this long translation process with ICEL just to alter the words of the Mass, what makes us think that we can alter them at whim now? (“Behold, this is Jesus, our white fluffy pillow, blessed are they who are called to this supper”)
